Its Saturday night 9:00 PM. Spent the last 10 days spending time with the family of a very close long time friend who passed away on the 8th at 59 years old. We were 2 of a gang of 5 that ran together since 1968. The better part of 5 decades. He was the first to die.
We grew up together, travelled, attended each others weddings, took the kids fishing and camping, laughed and cried together thru our lives. We also spilled more than a few beers together over the years.
A s h i t t y weekend for sure. The service was well attended by many old time friends of his and ours. Celebration of life was held after and the liquor started to flow. I stuck to my bottled water. Most carried on into the night, my wife and I went home.
Today, his sister and her family and three of our gang went to view the body. First time an one had seen him as he died in Houston and we are in Canada. It took so much to get the body released and shipped home.
After that, I wanted a drink so badly. More than I have in the last 8+ months. Man did I want a drink. I had 40 miles to drive home by myself and I came so close to stopping for a cold 6 pack.
Pulled into the DQ and got a large choc. shake instead.
I know I have not been posting much lately as things have been going well. Feeling good, strong and healthy and in a good place. This weekend was a real trigger. I am thankful I didnt pull it. Guess I just wanted to share. Only you really understand what I just went thru.
Rick

Rick, I am so, so sorry for the loss of your friend. I am very grateful that you did not succumb to grief in the long, lonely drive, but got a milkshake instead. You will be OK--Lord willing, you've been through the worst of the temptation.

Rick, I'm sorry to hear that. But well done on not drinking. It would have only made you feel worse. Keep on keeping on my friend. We all have your back!

I've been really good, but today I have to admit to feeling a little sorry for myself. I've just worked 11 shifts in a row and today was my first day off. I spent the whole day catching up on chores and this afternoon I had to go and lie down for a bit.
My joints have been a bit more painful than usual today and coupled with the tiredness it's made me angry. Angry that this has happened to me.
I think it's the extra work that's getting me down. Were short staffed and have a new manager and I don't want to be the person who brings up having an illness. It's funny because I finally have the facial rash under control and can wear make up again and everyone at work is saying I've never looked better. It's not just about my face it's about my body too and because no one can see fatigue and joint pain they assume I'm all better.
Wow sorry for the rant there, I guess I've had it bottled up a bit. The good thing is I don't want a drink. It's funny, it would have been the first thing I turned to in the past. It shows we've all come a long way!

If you're feeling that poorly, Apophylite, you need to say something. Most people have heard of lupus, and, though, they may not know much, they know that it's a lot more than a face rash. I'm sure nobody would think you were shirking--after all, look at your sterling reputation! And it would not kill anyone else to step up to the plate a little bit (whoops--sorry--American expression)--it wouldn't kill them to pitch in in a time of need and do a little extra. You have been after all!

Hello everyone, trusting that you all are doing fine and enjoying the summer days.
Tomorrow is my 9 month mark. Spending lots of time at our river property with the kids and grandkids. Caught a couple of nice rainbow on Saturday.
Made contact with a guy on the newbie page. His story sounded so similar to mine. Hopefully my words of experience will help. I try to help out where I can, but at this point, this site has been a huge part of my success to date, I cant help but think about drinking when I am online here.
Just thought I would check in with you and let you know I am alive and well.
Congrats to all of you for making it to nine months in August. Proud to be on the train with you.
Rick

I'm still here as well
I've been so busy with work I don't check in as often as I used to. But I'm strong in my sobriety. I don't even really count days anymore I just know it will be a year in nov.
I do enjoy a non alcohol wine now and again, I know it doesn't work for some but me for me there are no triggers.
Life is good, my lupus is under control and I have a new manager at work so things are a bit easier.
Glad to see were all hanging in there
