‘There’s an elephant in the room’ Weekenders 03 - 06 May 2019
Thanks Kaily, I’m just a largely self-taught amateur photographer with lots of room for improvement.
I bought a good DSLR camera almost 10 years ago and it’s still getting the job done. Some of the lenses are quite expenses but with good care will give long, reliable service and, if you make the right choices you don’t need more than 3 or 4 lenses for reasonable all-round photography applications.
For something less bulky I would say look at a decent “bridge” camera, where you get “all in in one”, but can still do a lot of fine tuning and experimenting on the manual settings.

Morning all. After a somewhat exorbitant expense this morning, I became the owner of an iPad SD Card Camera Reader, which is in fact just a small cable that allows transfer of photos from a camera card to an iPad.
I had better put it to use so here are a couple of pics that were taken with proper DSLR equipment on a recent trip into and around the Kruger Park.
Although these two are fortunately not in a room, it ties in on this week’s theme.
And this just gives an idea of a sunrise in the Kruger Park.
And a late afternoon.

Oh yeah, the sunsets in South Africa are the most gorgeous I've ever seen.
STDragon - here's the link if you'd be interested https://aeru.co.za/ The sanctuary is in a small town called Knysna, which is right near Plettenburgh Bay. It was an overall amazing trip and experience.
Stunning photos Captain.
Zoos - the now three day old giraffe calf has some fetlock issues and has casts on its rear legs. They don't think it will cause lasting problems, but he isn't going to be out running around as quickly as the last two giraffes born here. He looks funny with his big orange feet (the wraps are day-glow orange.)
And Dee, if there's asbestos still in Hardie siding, there would be an uprising amongst the nouveau riche here in Microsoftville.

Thanks for the information Captain.
Lovely sunsets Caprice.
Happy Anniversary STDragon. Some flowers for you both.
Bim that poor giraffe, lets hope the supports do the job quickly and efficiently and he is soon running free with Mum.

"Siding" is the exterior finish of a building. We are getting a completely new exterior of our buildings, everything from the frame out, so windows, doors, roof, moisture and pest barrier, exterior finish ( in this case, a fiber cement composite material called Hardie Siding that looks like wood.)
It will look like this, with the shingle look above the belly band, and plank appearance below. Expensive, lasts forever, paint only every 20 years or so. It's what most new construction is using these days over here.
Pretty sure James Hardie is a bajillionaire.

I was there for 6 weeks. They have absolutely ZERO tolerance for alcohol during the week, which is why I still had some energy in the tank to do all those weekend activities.
One of their guides was drunk, trying to intervene a Bull in musth (when testosterone is at its highest and they mate), and he got trampled to death.
Another guide there also got trampled, I forget the story, he is very shy and does not talk much in general, he lost a leg (has a wooden one), but still works there, still loves and doesn't blame the elephants.
One needs to be careful. You must side-step them because they won't. They will keep walking in parallel straight forward, through you. I got nudged by one that way, turned around and saw Keisha. She stopped in her tracks right behind me and was like, ''please step aside, passing through.'' Gentle, lovable, sweet Keisha.
In case you ever get chased by an elephant, there's only 1 way out - run in zigzag formation.

Oh, I know. It's ridiculous the amount of wood and plastic and man-made products we use in new construction. I wish we didn't have a pitched roof with petroleum based shingles and I wish we didn't have little decks on each unit. Just more expense. Believe me I tried to influence the materials in years worth of Board meetings. I have little pull.
I grew up in a post WWII cement block house.
Kaily, the baby is up and walking. He moves well. I think his prognosis is good.
