Class of January 2023 Part 1
Just Tony, I think you must ride the wave. I think this means ride it out and the feeling will pass.
I also find “playing the tape forward” extremely helpful. Imagine picking up that drink and how you will feel tomorrow”. The answer is: more miserable than you feel right now.

Just Tony, at day 9 you have already gone thru most of the worst cravings, you are just about to the last hurrah.
. Do not put yourself back to square one.
You CAN get thru this Tony.
Read a good book. Go on a long walk. Binge watch a good TV series. Go to a AA meetings.
Do whatever it takes to get your mind occupied with something else.
. You are almost there friend,
In a short time it gets so much better and manageable.

Just Tony,
. At 9 days you have made it thru the worst of it.
You are almost there despite the big craving that you are currently in.
I've gone back a bunch of times after a week,
It's always a huge mistake.
I've set myself back at square one before,
You just DON'T want to do that.
Try to occupy yourself with some distractions.
Read a good book, go for a long walk, binge watch a TV series, eat whatever you want.
In a very short time things get so much better and very manageable.
Hang in there friend, you are almost there!

Been there, done that, Z no worries.
Bassethound - I loved Hamilton! My daughters and I are going to see To Kill a Mockingbird in March. I am super excited.
Just Tony - you got this.
Welcome to all of the newcomers. Good to log in on Monday morning and see so much work being done to continue moving forward.
Day 92.

JustTony,
The AV is a liar. A con-artist of pain. Recognize the lie: “Alcohol will make it better.”
No. Alcohol does not make you better. Alcohol does not make life better. It dulls us, kills us, destroys our drive, and breaks our connection to other people.
My AV was loudest immediately after my physical withdrawal subsided. Day 9 is about right. You’ve just walked through Hell, my friend. It would be a bad idea to turn around and go back for a visit.
Walk on. Tune the AV out.

Alcohol only brings misery. I like your expression "dulls us". That's what my wife told me lately - I was strange, dull, unresponsive to anything. This is how you become.
I also likely another expression "Walked through Hell". Yep, that's where we are, but as I read somewhere - "If you're going through Hell, keep walking"!
Day 5 for me. Yesterday had lots of anxiety and didn’t sleep well. Feel better today though. From my many previous attempts, I know there are lots of ebbs and flows emotionally early on. I am just going to appreciate the current moment and enjoy feeling better than I did yesterday.
JustTony - I hope you are feeling better. If not, don’t get down on yourself or get to the point where you say “f*ck it, I’m going to have a drink”. The crappy feeling will pass. Do whatever you can to ride it out. No matter what, don’t pick up. Good on you for reaching out to the group.
Bobbie - that’s very cool for you and your daughters! We are looking into a show to bring our kids too.
I have physical therapy for my Achilles tonight and lots of running around to do. We are trying a new, simple cod recipe for dinner tonight that I’m excited about. Eating healthy (important part of self-care) always makes me feel better which helps keep the AV away.
I am committed to 24 more. Not picking up that first drink today.
Have a great day all!

Hi Tony. Do you have any distractions to us as an urge killer. Something you used to enjoy or try something new?

Wow, Aaron Sorkin re-wrote To Kill A Mockingbird? How fascinating. Is it a modern-day version? (I looked it up, very interesting).
This is a wonderful class—so much support. You all rock.

ToughChoices' words are spot on too.
