Anyone old enough to remember this one? It was #1 in 1944:

Mairzey Doats

Mairzey Doats and Dozey Doats and Liddlelamzy Divey;
A Kiddley Divey, too...wouldn't you?
If the words sound queer,
And funny to you ear...
A little be jumbled and jivey...
Sing mares eat oats, and does eat oats,
And little lambs eat ivy.

(AGAIN)

Just had lunch with my mom. SHe spent the whole time telling me how my dad wrecked her life by divorcing her forty years ago. She still can't get past that and bitches about it constantly. She even takes as an insult that her kids still love our dad, and have the audacity to love his second wife and two kids.
least...I'm sorry for your Mom...that she was never able to get over the bitterness, and get on with her life. That is really sad! I can't say I've ever quite forgiven my husband of 25 years for leaving me for a younger woman. Actually, if they had just continued to live together, I think I could have dealt with it. But, when he married her, that was the last straw. My one big fear was that he would have another family with her, since we had three kids together. Fortunately, that never happened...they divorced after only six months.

My kids always knew how I felt about the situation, so there was never any need to discuss it with them. However, they never accepted her...or, at least they never let on to me that they did...I'm sure they knew how much that would have hurt me.

Perhaps you can let your Mom know...in no uncertain terms...that you would really appreciate it if she didn't turn the conversation in that direction. Let her know how uncomfortable it makes you feel...that it ruins your time together...and, that you're afraid it will wind up endangering the relationship between the two of you.

It's understandable that you would still love your Dad...especially if he had always been a good father to you...he divorced your Mom, not you. However, I strongly suggest you not mention your loving feelings towards your Dad's second wife and his two kids. That's too much like rubbing salt in the wound. You have to have been there to fully comprehend the hurt your Mom feels...even forty years after the fact.

Any whines I had have been drowned out by the TV jingles... I haven't had TV for 11 years but still remember the damn songs and commercial jingles! Now if my memory would only work that well for everyday things...

Jerz, I don't mention the "other woman" to mom, but she knows our feelings. I've tried many times to get her to 'give it up' and get off the pity pot, but she doesn't hear me. She likes wallowing in her own sorrow and feeling 'put upon'. She likes being the victim, so I just let her be the victim. So I just nod and acknowledge her (continuing) suffering and let it go at that. Hell, she has a fit when me and bro leave extra money for a tip for the waitress! Complains that she left 'the right amount' and blah blah blah. Bro and me now leave the extra money covertly so she doesn't see us doing it!

Mom is an undiagnosed depression/anxiety/OCD but will never seek help for it since she's not the one with the problem... it's all due to dad's leaving. I just tune her out and love her for the good mom she's always been and let her vent... Bro and I are not telling her that we're going to dad's 80th b.day party in NH this spring. The less she knows, the better.

Jerz...My mom used to sing Mairzey Doats to me when I was a kid.

Hello, I'm Mister Ed

A horse is a horse, of course of course,
and no one can talk to a horse of course,
that is of course, unless the horse,
Is the famous Mister Ed!

Go right to the source and ask the horse.
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse.
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mister Ed.

People yak-it-ti-yak a streak
and waste your time of day,
but Mister Ed will never speak,
unless he has something to say...

A horse is a horse, of course of course,
And this one will talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking horse?
Well, listen to this...

I am Mister Ed

least...sounds like you and your sibling are handling things well. Some people (like your Mom) seem to thrive on their misery. I have a sister-in-law that I never call (and dread when she calls me)...she spends the entire time letting me know how much sickness and bad luck the family's had since the last time we spoke. Consequently, I never let her know what my own family has been going through...don't want her to feel it's "can you top this".

CMC...glad I brought back a pleasant memory.

Fub...
mares eat oats, and does eat oats,
And little lambs eat ivy.

I've tried to explain to mom that I forgive cause I want to be forgiven... but she's having none of that. So I just let it go. I just love mom for who she is, not for who she'd like to be.... Queen of Revenge. It makes me sad to see her wasting her days on this resentment, but I've learned to live with it.

I've now got TV jingles in my head and can't get them out!!!

The 'manic' part of manic depressive just struck out of nowhere. I'm going back to bed for a while. So sick of feeling like a bouncing ball. I want my feet on solid ground.

This is the song that never ends,
it just goes on and on my firends.
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was
and they continued singing it forever just because......
