He said, "The morning breeze has secrets to tell you, do not go back to sleep", (I actually think he was quoting someone else... Rumi maybe?)
Anyway, for an insomniac artist like myself this was good advice. Better to rise for awhile and be creative than toss and turn.
I'd like to start reading more from him, do you have suggestions on a book to start with?
Hi Blackbirdsing.

I think that quote may have been Rumi. I always think of that one when I wake early.

He speaks about additions in the 'Being in Balance' book/cds. He admits to having many addictions, mentions drugs, alcohol, sugar, nicotine. He said he did go to rehab once to see what it is like :wtf2

He says that addiction is constantly chasing after something you don't want and never getting enough - how true! I always love to hear his addiction quote from Ram Dass. "If you are already in Detroit, then you don't need a bus to get there". I have never been to Detroit but I get the point.

Over the last couple of years, many days I have listened to the addiction section of Being in balance on my iPod - I think I know much of it off by heart. I think it is probably what keep me sober on the days that I didn't drink.

He has 5 steps for addiction recovery in 'Being in Balance'. I am summarising :-
1. It's all about realignment (with Source/God)

2. Love your addictions (if you fight them, you give them more power over you)

3. Love yourself (e.g. pray gratitude for your body and for the willingness to love it unconditionally)

4. Remove all shame (negative emotions just give the addiction more power.
Everything is in it rightful place. There are no accidents here, you have nothing to be ashamed of. You are meant to be in this low place right now to give you the energy to get to the higher place you are heading.)

5. Live from a new knowing (basically your connection with God. You know he is there with you and the connection is unshakeable.)

In my mind it all fits in very well with the 12 Step programme.

There are 8 other principals in the book for creating habits to match your desires such as There's more to life than making it go faster, Earth's crammed with heaven (I love this one) and you Can't discover light by analyzing darkness. It's a quick, easy read.

I have Inspiration - Your Ultimate Calling and the CD lectures. The book is a much heavier read basically about living in a position of inspiration which is the true meaning of your life.

The Power of Intention (my username) which is about changing the way you look at things and the things you look at will change. All spiritual, connecting with God stuff. A detailed read again also great lectures on CDs. He shares an observation he has framed in his home. I love it and always meant to put it on my fridge. In fact, I am intend to do it today!! (I thank you for leading me to pull this book off the bookshelf today)

Good Morning
This is God
I will be handling
All of your
Problems today
I will not need
Your help, so have
A miraculous day

Excuses Begone book (long/detailed read) and CDs about re-programing your self-defeating thinking habits. Not got round to absorbing this as I have been too drunk ! and making too many excuses !! but I am told it is very good.

10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace. A very easy, quick read. I love the secret "don't die with the music still in you". How many times have I thought of that while life has been on hold due to drinking!

Getting in the Gap - Making conscious contact with God through meditation. Quick read book and meditation CD. I really struggled doing this. I know what Wayne would say - that if I struggle I will never be able to achieve, you have to quit fighting. Step 11 has been very lacking in my recovery which turned to relapse. I need to rethink what I am doing because if nothing changes, nothing changes, right?

Thank you once again for leading me to pull the dusty book off the bookshelf. I need this right now.

Anything else you want to know about the books just ask. I could talk about Wayne Dyer forever. Sorry if have bored anyone.

((Thank you Thank you Thank you))

I just found myself lost in his website after reading your recommendations... and then lost again in the itunes store perusing all of the different audio downloads, I had no idea he had written so many books.

I think I'll begin w/ the balance book, I'm really curious/interested to read more of his take on addiction, esp. the idea of loving your addiction... that idea really resonates with me.

I've been reading a lot about the law of attraction and listening to some lectures from Abraham Hicks, they speak in depth about feelings indicating whether or not you are aligned w/ the spirit, and ways to align your thoughts with what you want to attract to your life. Coming from this standpoint the idea of loving your addiction makes a lot of sense to me.

I also saw that he has an audio book w/ carolyn myss- another speaker who I used to love!

I think I might just have to join you and put that quote somewhere I can see it everyday, reading it just now I felt a little of the weight lift from my shoulders.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share : ) Let's keep this thread going!

He talks much about "you get what you think about whether you like it or not" I have been mindful about that when a thought creeps in to my head that, at some point, I will have a craving. When I walk around the supermarket I am saying "I don't drink, I don't drink, I don't drink" rather than "drink is everywhere, it is so tempting.

It's a beautiful quote and it is now on my fridge.

You really are welcome and as I said I thank you because it has given me much to think about today. And that is another day sober.

Heard about that movie too, but have yet to see it.

I've read "Change your Thoughts - Change your Life." Loved and got a lot out of that particular book. It is so true that the way we perceive things, people and situations really determines the direction our life will take.

"Power of Intention" I read this one too. Very interesting book. I don't think I have read one of his books didn't learn something from.

I have another but I can't recall the exact title "The Wisdom of the Tao" I think. That was heavy reading, but worth the time.

Huge fan.

I think he has a lot of fans

I've not read his study on the Tao but I have heard him talk quite a bit about it.

I love the paradox "if you want to get something done, do nothing"

I so get this now. When I am drinking, nothing gets done and yet I really try hard by making lists, setting goals, marking on calenders etc etc and all that happen more stuff just piles up, undone.

Since I finally handed it all over to God, everything that needs to be done, has been done. It was easy.

Have you ever seen him live?

In my mind it all fits in very well with the 12 Step programme.
From what I have read here I agree, this would be an excellent supplement to AA or any other 12 step program.

This is in DIRECT relation to my post about "should we label ourselves addicts" Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change. That is EXACTLY my point my friend. Thank you!

Hi Rob,
I see where that falls in line with your post and I understand where you are coming from. Personally (at this particular moment in time) the alcoholic label suits me as it is a definitive "I can never drink again".

To expand further on Dyer and addiction

"I support any programme designed to help people escape this unbalanced cycle that is such a destroyer of lives. My contribution is a brief description of the key points I've found extremely useful in becoming an addiction-free person."

....."start right this minute by offering a silent prayer of gratitude for your liver, your heart, and your brain. Just say: Thank you, God, for this glorious gift. I treasure it, and with Your help, today I will begin to love it unconditionally. If you still feel attracted to substances that you despise, say this silent prayer before ingesting them. Love will ultimately become the added weight that rebalances your life"

I read 'support any programme' as referencing 12 Steps (he does mention on the CD) but he defines himself as 'addiction-free' - the point you were making.

I've recently caught only a smart part of one his programs where he mentioned he did not regret the years he used alcohol ... wished I could have seen it in its entirety so that I would know the context.

I'm a realtively new fan of his, but I'm on board with the idea of "The Shift" Taking Your Life from Ambition to Meaning

Hi Pb,

Wayne's take on addiction is that we had to do what we did to get where we are, or we were are heading. It's all perfect.

I do really enjoy listening to that man

To answer your question of long ago, "Have you ever seen him live?"

No, but I would LOVE to. I was very upset to hear he has cancer, but if anyone can deal gracefully with that disease it is him. I have watched him numerous times on PBS and we rent his audio books from the library often. He has so much wisdom packed inside. He recently wrote a book to go along with the movie "The Shift." I will definitely read it. Haven't seen the movie yet. He says if you purchase the book today you can watch the movie for free, BUT I don't currently have the money. It will come in good time.

Thanks again!!
