it's been four days since
surgery so today i'm
cutting back on drugs

we'll see how it goes
and with any luck i'll be
off painkillers soon

i would like to switch
to aleve by monday and
toss the narcotics

what's different this
time is i don't like the fog
of medication

i used to like the
white tunnel of near death space
from the opioids

now i want to live
with awareness, clarity
and concentration

not forever but for moments at a time
administer the drug and lie down on the rug
where the bells don't toll they just chime

but now he's awake and there's too much at stake
to play such a dangerous game
there's so much left to do so it really is true
this time is different; it won't be the same

getting back to the basics of life
oh, how priorities shift in times of strife
i used to want to be somebody
could have been a contender
now i'm just grateful my junk works
and i can function according to my gender
when the body fails us
and the mind is addled by meds
we tend to reevaluate everything
from our toes to the contents of our heads
i don't know if i've accomplished
what i had once set out to do
but i've made a small difference
if only to a few
and i'm up and about now
and not particularly old
if all heals properly
i will play my cards
and not fold

bruised a lady's heal and didn't wanna face her
so she swerved into the produce isle
while dessimated an orange pile
and giggled when the manager tried to chase her
