Making progress on the frame. Today I'll drill holes for the fasteners I made to hold the picture in, run to the hardware store for a sawtooth picture hanger, and get it hung. Once that's done I want to take some pictures of the frame and the joinery. After it's hung for a while I'll decide if I want to leave the finish matte or wax it to make it satin.
On to the next project. A stave sided mahagony tom. Concert style (open bottom) 13" head and 13" deep. First step make a 2" deep mockup out of scrap pine to make sure the way I plan to do the milling will work and that (most important) the stave size makes a cylinder that can be turned on my lathe to a 13" outside diameter.
Got the mock up cut and glued. Lathe is set up to turn the outside to exactly 13". So far everything works fine.Glad I had the idea (as I was falling asleep) to spline the staves. Not much more work but it makes the assembly way easier.
Turned the entire mock up to 13", took it off the lathe and gave it the lightest squeeze to see if it flexed - and ... it shattered into many pieces. It was only 1 3/4" high so a 13" high cylinder might have better strength - or not. Way too mucvh work to take a dhance. So I ordered an unfinished drum shell. I can finish that and put the hardware on and be sure I'll have something I can play.
Getting delivery today on a fine block plane. I loaned my Stanley to my daughter & her husband. They had some doors to trim. I came across a Bridge City Tool Works one that dazzled me. So I decided to treat myself to it. THe loan is now a gift. One for them and one for me.So much better than spending the money on booze.
The orchid club meeting was very good yesterday. The speaker was great and I just had to buy one of the plants he had for sale. He is my favorite orchid hybridizer and I walked away from the sale plants once. But then took another look and one plant stood out to me. This happened once before when he was at a meeting several years ago. That plant had stupendous flowers. No telling what his plant will turn out to be - but ... I couldn't not take the chance.
Did a good deed yesterday by picking up some wood that was just going to go into a dumpster and giving a suggestion where they might get rid of the rest. Hope it works out for them. I did what I could.
Drum shell came yesterday. Now I have to decide if I want to leave it natural wood with a semi-gloss finish or use a semi-transparent stain. Firat I need to put it on the lathe and round the bearing edge. There's a lot of other stuff I need to accomplish before my shoulder replacement so it's not something that needs to be done right away.
Stained the shell yesterday. I was going to take a long ride on the bike today but it came in rain. So I'm going to fine sand the shell and probably re-stain it. Then I can put a high gloss finish on it. Hopefully today.
Got the drum together and semi-tuned. Now I need to build some legs. I'm really getting into the idea of doing some drumming again. Looking at used snares and a new ride cymbal as a minimal set.
Decided on a better used Gretch snare and a used I series Zildjian rather than the Planet Z. Should get the stuff some before surgery so I can get it set up and play a bit. After surgery, once I'm over the innitial pain, I can still practice with my right hand till my left heals.
