Originally an 18th-century London public house; I've read that "Bag o' Nails" may have been a corruption of the name "Bacchanales".

I think mushy peas with fish and chips is mainly a northern England thing. When I lived in London everyone seemed to have tartare sauce or something similar with their fish and chips.

I am a vinegar girl all the way....bit of standard salt and some vinegar, and I am happy.
My dad was a Londoner, and that was his way with fish and chips.
Of course growing up, all of the fish and chips were home-made by mum and dad as a team.
Dad was the potato cutter-upperer.

Lovely memories. ❤️

Home made fish and chips sound lovely! Great memories Venuscat
I lived in Manchester and Liverpool for a while and that is where I was introduced to mushy peas! I love them.
I didn't pick up any northern accent when I was there except for the words Mushy peas, which makes my children laugh. Where I now live, the South west of England, Cheesy Chips are a thing.

Mushy peas? No thanks!

When we were growing up, dad used to make us real french fries, made from fresh potatoes. Yum. Now I bake the frozen kind, but fondly remember dad's homemade french fries.

Billie is lying on one blankie and covered with the other. She looks so cute, all covered up. Every time I see her all comfy and happy, I give thanks for my sobriety. Being sober means I give her my best attention and love and time. When I was drinking, I neglected my three dogs, not life threatening neglect, but just didn't give them the care and attention they deserved. Hardly any walks. Jack and Billie both never knew me drinking cause I was sober when I got them.

English style fish is battered, yes?
Brown sauce is popular to have with fish, which is a vinegar base sauce?
Are the chips the same as what we would typically call fries, like at McDonald's?

Very similar but chips tend to be thicker rather than the thin McDonald's style fries. Yup, English style fish is battered. It tastes lovely, especially when it is the crispy and light batter that one of my local chippies does.

I tend to have tomato sauce (ketchup) with my fish, chips and mushy peas. I wouldn't have thought brown sauce would go with the fish. One of my sisters loves curry sauce with her fish and chips which to me is another big no-no!

Typical fried fish at the Cityboy household. Usually a light breading with some cajun type seasoning. It's making me think of having some this weekend. It's going to be weather more appropriate for having chili.

Mushy peas are not ordinary green peas, they are prepared from dried Marrowfat peas:

[article includes photos depicting chips, also]

End of Day 76. There were few moments today when I suddenly got the urge to drink. Guess the alcoholic highway in my brain lighted up to attract me. Just ignored and moved on and the lights switched off in a while.

Good night from Seattle!

Goodnight calmself and congratulations on day 76. Good work ignoring the av.

I love fish and chips. It’s got into a weekly ritual nowadays as mum in law has them once a week.

MesaMan, great pic of MesaPup.

Well I had my fish and chips last night, they were very good but it is no longer cheap like it was once. Some places in London do serve mushy peas now, a London tradition is to serve them with a pickled cucumber which my parents generation used to call a 'Wally' for some reason.

Back in the 1950's and 60's there used to be a well known music venue in Soho called the Bag O' Nails. The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their 1st gig there or something and lots of other famous bands too (I don't know which ones though)

Morning all!

I've just got back from shopping. Or should I say I got blown back from shopping. We've got Storm Malik hitting the UK at the moment and the wind is very strong. Strong enough in fact to have flattened a couple of trees near to my house as well as bringing down garden fences. I've had to put my two wheelie bins into the kitchen as they were blowing around the garden and threatening to escape into the street! I'm not going anywhere else for the rest of the day as the strong winds are expected to reach up to 80 mph in some areas.

It's also where Paul McCartney met his future wife Linda Eastman, Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues met his future wife and John and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac met here too. It seems to have been a favourite haunt of many a 1960s rock star and group. I'm sure I once went there in the mid 80s when it had long ceased to be a live music venue. I've looked up the location and it does seem very familiar (just off Regent Street). I also remember the place as being down some stairs, in the basement, which matches a description of the venue.
