Well done Gilmer and bim you'll both do OK in the Smoke
I spent my teenage years learning to suppress my cockney accent as although picaresque it is not the best thing for getting a decent job so now I sound more like Jamie Oliver I guess (a mockney)
These alternate or slanguages are never very politically correct, the cockney word for an American is (and please accept my apologies at this point) "septic" - septic tank = yank which I believe started in WW2 when British men resented Americans for their money and smart uniforms and access to toiletries and hosiery, all of which British women rather liked

Staaaaahhhhhhhpppppp.
I don't even know many colloquialisms. Or maybe I do and I don't know I do...I'm surprised humans can communicate anything at all to be honest.
I guess we don't do it all that well, though. :-|

'low dat
Variant of allow dat
Means "no" but is a stronger phrase than "no". It is usually used as a sign of resentment.
"Q: Wanna go to the cinema? A: Nah 'low dat, that girl might be there!"

p.s. Urban Dictionary wants me to define "In the Smoke." I canna do it.
I just got back from the dentist. My hygienist actually gave me glowing reports ...I used to not really keep up with my "homework" as she calls it when I was drinking - plus I didn't eat well at all.
Yay. Just one more good thing about sobriety. It makes my teeth happy. To celebrate I had a cupcake! I wanted a box of donuts but I had one little cupcake. So many victories today.
"The Smoke" - that makes sense, all the fog, eh?
