One Year & Over Part 38
Feel better soon GHD
Dharma, I found during my counselling training, that when seemingly inappropriate emotions came through it was because I had past issues I hadn't come to terms with. Sobriety brought a lot of them back into focus and I had counselling and used anti d's to manage the early time.
Mags it's possible that you relax in your sleep and don't struggle with your breathing? Have you ever done yoga type breathing exercises to strengthen your lungs and utilise more of them?
All good with me here in Tootsville a long weekend with lots planned.

Hi, Overs!
Hope everyone has a happy Friday. For those under the weather, feel better soon! Allergy season is in full swing here, that's for sure.
It's Memorial Day here, meaning Monday is a bank holiday. We are planning to just stay around home this weekend, working in the garden, etc and take the kids to the pool. They have such a great time, and one of the highlights is ice cream treats from the snack bar (for mom, too!)
We will also go to our town's parade on Monday. It's important that the younger generations understand that this extra day off is not random- it's to take time honoring the fallen heroes who fought for our country's freedom.
I just started watching Peaky Blinders; 2 episodes in and I'm hooked! So, there's that....

Good for you Dharma! Keep us in the loop on your AA adventures.
Mags,
Whatever helps I hope you can get a quick resolution.
FBL ya beat deadline by a day. woo hoo!
Good night Wolf, Hello Wolf, Star, Sassy, RZ, Venus!
Toots glad you are doing well too!
GHD, feeling any better?
For all the folks in other countries our Memorial Day is the same as Remembrance Day for the commonwealth countries, that you hold on the 11th hour of the 11th day, of the 11th month.
Like yours, some take the weekend off and think happy holidays. As a retired military man it has special significance for me and my brothers in arms from long ago to those making the ultimate sacrifice today.
I wrote "A Day To Remember" and added the history of the day below.
Memorial Day
Begun in 1866 to honor Civil War Combatants, it was later expanded to honor all brave men and women who served this country in all wars.
Between cookouts, picnics, vacations and sales, Memorial Day may be losing its meaning!
Please take one minute, at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day to Remember and honor those brave men and women, who paid the piper that we may dance.
A Day to Remember
By Itchy
They gave their all, their lives, and the futures they held dear,
They left behind a legacy of sadness and of tears.
A folded flag, the sound of Taps, the pride mixed in their leaving,
With heads held high, and tears in eye, the loved ones still are grieving.
Remember them.
Went in harm's way, so young, and they never will grow older,
Leaving memories, and pictures, citations in a folder.
They left their sons, their little girls, to grow up wondering why,
Their daddy that they loved so well, went off to war to die.
Remember them.
For some it changed, and mother, was the casualty of war,
The arms that hugged them never would again, forevermore.
Yet all were sons and daughters, and left behind an ache,
In the hearts of those, whose turn should come, before their children's wake.
Remember them.
They rest in peace, some say, and who am I to doubt it?
The higher purpose it was served, the enemy was routed.
Some came home, some never went, some only watched the news,
But they will never hold their child, or argue current views.
Remember them
It wasn't meant, in leaving, when they all marched off to war,
That we'd be left without them, from the cannon's deadly roar.
I'm sure that they, would rather, have been here for all of us,
But someone had to fight those wars, someone pay the cost.
Remember them
At 3 PM, this Monday, my flag will fly half mast,
As all across the nation, floats the somber sound of Taps.
It's only for one minute, or maybe three or four,
In tears, I will remember, those who died in every war.

Hi overs
Hope your feeling better soon, GHD .
Itchy, that was very poignant, thank you.
Toots, thanks, I don't do enough breathing excercises, I purchased a practice blower to enable me to strengthen my lungs but forgot about it. I've got a chest infection at the moment so I can't blow a candle out, but I will start up again as soon as I'm feeling ok. Thanks again toots.
Hope it's a good weekend for all.

YW Dee, Mags and Sassy.
For you new folks, the "Overs" from the start of the One Year and Over forum have seen this every Memorial Day for the past six years. I do remember them.
Good Morning and Goodnight Wolf! I get on usually after midnight your time. Right now it's 8:20PM Friday here and 2:20AM Saturday there. I can faintly her all the snores from over there.

Taking a mental health day today (second in a row). I don't do that much but I've been pretty worn out. It will be good to spend some time with the GF. Our schedules are not in sync. - I still feel a bit guilty, but I'm pretty shot and 99% of the time I show up and work hard, and I have the time.
Good to see you here Dharma. I'm not here much, but it reminds me of when someone at NA gets a year and they start raising their hand in the meetings where they give keytags to newcomers and for cleantime and then ask those with a year or more to raise their hand. They always have the best smiles during those first few days or weeks. It also reaffirms my faith that recovery works.
It can be emotionally draining to see so many people in NA (and here!) come in and out and not give themselves a break. Then, just when it seems hopeless, you see one or more people get a year and you smile and it strengthens your own recovery. So thanks D!
Life is pretty good overall. I'm just feeling a bit old and worn out at the moment. But I'm not where I was.

Itch, thanks for the yearly reminder about the true meaning of Memorial Day.
I'll always associate this particular weekend with my first real drinking experience. I wrote this in "my story" at SR a few years ago:
It was Memorial Day weekend of 1980. I was 14 years-old and my older cousin got a six-pack of beer and a cheap bottle of wine. I didn't care much for the wine, but as for the beer, it was love at first sip. I drank most of that 6-pack and from the age of 14-18 I was drinking beer nearly every weekend.
It took me 29 years to finally realize that I'd had enough. I'm pretty sure if I'd have kept going the way I was, I'd be dead by now. Thanks to all of you for helping me see the light.
Have a great Saturday, overs!

Better, but still struggling with a bad cold. And now my husband has it. We are supposed to go to a family event today, but I think we will have to cancel. It's unfortunate since it has been almost a year since I have seen some of them.
Thanks for the reminders and 27 years of service Itchy! After graduating college, I applied to the Air Force OCS and went through MEPS. This was during the early 1980's, at the height of the Reagan recession when jobs were scare. I was politely told that perhaps I would do better enlisting at Lackland and going that route, as the AF had plenty of better officer candidates.
I eventually found a job I liked and went that route instead. I sometimes wonder how my life would have changed if I had done the AF instead. I wonder if my alcoholic tendencies would have exploded earlier in my life in the military.
Thanks again Itchy!
