Class of September 2013 - Part 33
Can you help me understand the difference?
I drink....sorry DRANK every single day. And for the last six months, I was going to bed pretty hammered. It felt like it was getting worse progressively.
I ask because seriously...until recently, I never thought I was an alcoholic, which made it harder to quit. I could drink and not black out, I could drink and be socially responsible....a very functioning.
At this point, I really don't like be either an alcoholic or a heavy drinker. It was nice to not wake up with a hangover this morning.

[QUOTE="LillianGish;5884193"]Hello my friends!!
So good to see everyone again.
And Fish.....my buddy!
I too am on the horse again as of this weekend. I will be joining a few classes. I need to get healthy!
My life is ok. I just could be so much better sober, so here goes.
Glad to "see" you all. Hope you are well.
These gremlins are a sight for sore eyes too. [/QUOT

I recentl read that the difference between a heavy drinker and an alcoholic is that the heavy drinker is able to stop drinking at will wheras the alcoholic cannot.
Do you think you could not drink for 2 weeks ? That is the standard AA test.
We will see!!!
I could never see a palpable difference between a 'hard drinker' & an alcoholic...still can't.
I stopped 'on by own' so by that definition I'd be a hard drinker...but I still very nearly killed myself with my drinking....

There is a fine line between the two. I've attached an article below re this topic. In any case, it would only be beneficial health wise to stop drinking !
Heavy drinkers aren't necessarily alcoholics, but may be "almost alcoholics" - Harvard Health Blog - Harvard Health Publications

I think the term is not so black and white, and I agree with Dee, that the definition is less important than the effects. If drinking is causing problems for someone, it's a problem and it is a good idea to address it.
I probably fall on the line, but, in relapses, I've noticed increased tolerance. When does one cross the line? I don't ever see myself being anything other than an evening drinker, or daytime if it is a party or such. That said, I'm certainly better off sober.

Kane, that was a very interesting article! Thank you for sharing it. I think I fall in between alcoholic and heavy drinker...I'm an enigma. LOL!
Doubting I'm an alcoholic, has always lead me away from doing something about my drinking. My AV who likes to tell me, don't worry, you're not an alcoholic so you can have a drink.
I think today and everyday...I'll be Lillian who has been drinking too much and needs to take better care of herself. I don't seem to be able to moderate lately...so I give. Uncle.
Tonight, I am craving ice cream. Time to go get some low carb yumminess!
Gosh it's so great to visit our group again. I've missed you.
That's exactly where I'm at I can leave it alone but then when I catch back up it's a mess
Hi Work!
I'm doing great thank you. I have 36 days of solid sobriety under my belt and really feel like I've turned my final corner on this issue. I feel so much better!
Phoebe, I'm sure the confirmation will be really well done knowing you. Parties are stressful for me to plan though - I will be anxious to hear how you do.
How are you Work?
