Let's hear it for our Furry (and not so furry) Friends Weekender 19-21st May.

The Weekender thread is all about sharing our situation and getting through those 3 days of the week that for many of us are the hardest time. That is it's primary function which overrides all others - stay sober, don't use and we will help each other as much as we can.

But of course the weekend is about living. I know a lot of SR members have or like pets as evidenced by the number of pets that crop up in avatars, postscripts, taglines and posts that mention them.

April the Giraffe also had many followers on Weekenders.

It cannot be much fun for even the most self contained pet if we spend much of the time intoxicated or in bed. By contrast a sober weekend means that we can not only provide the care that we are supposed to but we can also spend time interacting and enjoying their company.

You don't have to have a pet to join in, as a single guy who works 5 days a week and lives 3 floors up it would not be fair on any pet so I have to forgo that pleasure.

That said I do sponser two Penguins at London Zoo. Originally it was a pair, Hank and Grizelda. Hank is no longer with us but he lived for double his life expectancy in the wild. Grizelda now has a toyboy who already has a sponsor.

So if you have them, let us know about your pets or maybe some wild creatures that are local to you. Photos of them would be greatly appreciated too.

We especially want to hear from those new to recovery, posting and sharing never does any harm and can give you that little bit of extra motivation.

Have a grrrrrrreat weekend!

Sao

shotgun!

Since getting the therapy hamster, daughter and I have been exploring the city's pet stores. It's become a fun weekend thing to do together.

Wilbur's the dog in my avatar. He officially belongs to my daughter, but he used to live with us before she got married.

His main activities are sleeping and begging, in that order. Oh, yes--and picking fights with male dogs three times his size!

Oh, yeah--I'm in!

Wilbur has it figured- well the sleeping part. Begging? Only if no one understands it IS begging. Blue healer/ border collie X is the dog. Had 2, will find another dog buddy when I git me mah own space.

Wilbur took an entire year to be housebroken--he refuses to come when called.

But just look at him and say the word "Cheese?" and he's instantly at your feet!

Thanks for the opener Sao and congrats on shotgun STDragon!

I have a confession - I like animals more than I like a lot of people :p

Somewhat true but.......you've gotta give it to them. Who else loves you unconditionally outside of the required water/food bowl and the opening of the door to go out and back in multiple times? Even then, they still love you, they just become a big PITA

Here's my rescue cat Waffles, we've had him now for almost 10 years. He's doing his favorite thing.

Have a great day everyone!

Wes is my avatar. Tula won't sit still long enough for me to get a good photo. I got a nice one once of her paw tho.

I think most dogs are reincarnated males. Think about it.

Could be well be. It might even go both ways as I often feel the urge to bite my my postman.

Here are some of the penuins, they are Humboldt penguins and are sadly endangered by overfishing. This is not my photo (I will have to look for them, I can't remember where I stored them)

I have two dogs; an elderly Shiba Inu named Jack and a young beagle mix named Billie.

I also have four cats; Freddie, Lily, Zippy, and Franny.

They are the love of my life and a huge reason to stay sober: to take good care of them.

This is Jack.

And this is Billie.

Thanks, as always, Sao, for the thread. I have a 13 year old cockatiel. In my drinking years, he really didn't get enough attention from me and I would scream at him at times, I had no patience. He's happy now, a bit ornery, but I find I have better patience to deal with him. I live alone, so he's a nice companion, sings happily.

I'm in too! I have a labrador of 20 months. I tried to upload a pic to photo album but it's horizontal. Come to think of it, he's mostly horizontal

Thanks Sao- As always, great lead-in to a sober weekend.

Unfortunately, I do not own a pet. However, I recently met a woman who is looking to give away her beautiful red Pomeranian. He's a beautiful boy. DH called the woman a few weeks ago to follow up with her on her offer to give the dog a new home and she said that they won't be giving him away until her daughters leave for college in the fall. We're still deciding if we will wait for the Pomeranian or find another dog at a shelter.

Either way, we hope to have a new addition to our home soon. I grew up on a farm and my family always had dogs, here are just a few breeds I recall: beagle, 2 St Bernard's, Dachshund, Husky, Boarder Collie, Chow... Needless to say, being without a fluffy companion is a huge void for me.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend. I plan to!
