Question
definitely a good post for this time of year, but we need always be wary of this type thing.
I was at a baby shower not too long ago, and there was said punch bowl, but I ( imagine that ) noticed their liquor cabinet on top of the fridge, so I asked my GF was it safe to drink the punch 1st. Thankfully in my case it was, but I know many more people who have been burnt by this same exact scenario you mention in your OP.
Also be wary of desserts made w/ liquor, I have been burnt by those in the past, and even though it's just a little bit of alcohol, it still triggers all kind of craziness in my head. And the phenomenon of craving is ever present after word, and all the other insanity that goes w/ it

I remember last year, my college kids came home and they put out their Scope mouthwash. I thought it was the Alcohol Free stuff we now get. I took a mouth full of that, and yea, it was weird..... trigger city.
Sh1t happens.... we just got to be alert and make sure it doesn't happen to us.

That's not a slip. It's a close call though. She'll be more careful next time.
I went up to the pool bar on a cruise ship (a 'sober' cruise as a matter of fact) and ordered two virgin daquaris for me and the wife. I stood there and watched the guy pour a shot of rum off into the blender and gave him a yell. He looked like one of those guys in a Casper cartoon that saw a ghost, he jumped about 5 feet. I told him I had 8 years sober and didn't feel like blowing it today. He said 'no mon, you wouldna wont to do tha'. LOL !!
When we are right with God, God takes care of us. There are bound to be close calls.

This time of year we have to be careful of punch drinks etc. at Christmas parties.
last night at a meeting, the woman sharing said, she'd been at a wedding and someone set a drink next to hers and she mistakenly took a drink of it. Turns out, someone had sat a gin and tonic next to her water.
Not sure if, her sponsor had her turn in her coins or not but, this isn't a slip in my mind.
Someone had posted a thread like this already but, I was curious ast to what everyone thought about this!

Glad I came across this thread..a lot of good info here I wouldn't have thought of. No more tiramisu? Bummer! I hadn't even thought of deserts really. The bartender mistaking a virgin, I've thought of. Part of me thinks, "oh it's just a desert", but I'm new to this so I realize that's probably really naive of me...that's why I appreciated reading all this. Thanks!

Good question Captain. I started a thread about this a few days ago and didn't get much of a response. I too was wondering about things like: beer battered fries, beer/cheese soup, and things sauteed in wines or Brandy. I will be interested to see what people have to say.
I was taught that a slip/relapse happens well before a drink is picked up.
At the same time, extra effort needs to be made to ensure a drink isn't picked up by accident.
I like McGowdog's idea of bringing my own mug. That works great for private parties in people's homes. I've been known to bring a cup of Starbucks with me.
But if at a restaurant or other event where bringing your own mug might be frowned upon, ORDER A FREAKING SODA. Nobody gives a rat's a$$ whether you LOOK like you're drinking alcohol or not. You're the only one who cares. You're the only one who thinks its a big deal. Get over the social paranoia and order a Pepsi already.
Ordering a "virgin" anything is asking for trouble. For me, it's a risk that really isn't worth taking.
Pepsi, please

I've shared it on SR for years.
I cringe when I s watch cooks on the Food Network
while pouring booze into dishes....

Cooking and Alcohol
The conventional wisdom accepted by just about everyone in the food world is that all the alcohol you add to a dish evaporates or dissipates during cooking. It’s wrong. In fact, you have to cook something for a good three hours to eradicate virtually all traces of alcohol. And some cooking methods are less effective at removing alcohol than just letting it stand out uncovered overnight.
A study conducted by the US Department of Agriculture’s Nutrient Data Laboratory calculated the percentage of alcohol remaining in a dish based on various cooking methods. The results are as follows:
Preparation Method Percent of Alcohol Retained
alcohol added to boiling liquid & removed from heat 85%
alcohol flamed 75%
no heat, stored overnight 70%
baked, 25 minutes, alcohol not stirred into mixture 45%
baked/simmered, alcohol stirred into mixture:
15 minutes 40%
30 minutes 35%
1 hour 25%
1.5 hours 20%
2 hours 10%
2.5 hours 5%
And you can try these..
Booze Flavoring In Cooking
This was the September 2003 issue of theAA Grapevine.
