I was taught that a slip/relapse happens well before a drink is picked up.

At the same time, extra effort needs to be made to ensure a drink isn't picked up by accident.

I like McGowdog's idea of bringing my own mug. That works great for private parties in people's homes. I've been known to bring a cup of Starbucks with me.

But if at a restaurant or other event where bringing your own mug might be frowned upon, ORDER A FREAKING SODA. Nobody gives a rat's a$$ whether you LOOK like you're drinking alcohol or not. You're the only one who cares. You're the only one who thinks its a big deal. Get over the social paranoia and order a Pepsi already.

Ordering a "virgin" anything is asking for trouble. For me, it's a risk that really isn't worth taking.
