Thanks D....
Just curious: what's the word "syncophants" ?

I assume you meant sycophants:
"a person who praises powerful people in order to get their approval"

Please humor me...not in any way meant to be disrespectful.

Is "syncophants" a typo or another meaning?

I don't see myself as powerful - I just work hard and play hard. I really have to think about who my true friends are.

I'm taking a "get out of jail free" newbie card....but curiosity is killing me.

At least my college education is starting to pay off

Thank you Dee and Caramel...best if stay on here until I feel sleepy. Which may not be any time soon.

Anyways, the later I stay up, the faster tomorrow will pass.

In case your wondering, I joined the Marines to get away from serious substance abuse in High School. I was fortunate to be born with a brain.
I skated easily through school, did great on my SAT's (which I took stoned - maybe that's why).

Only college I applied to was UCLA and was accepted. I shocked a lot of people when I disappeared after HS graduation and showed up 3 months later in enlisted USMC uniform.

USMC boot camp was my first taste of sobriety and I embraced the code of ethics and loved the whole experience. (Don't tell my Drill Instructors that!)

All during my active duty, my Commanding Officers questioned what was I doing enlisted? ( I aced the ASVAB test).

I was awarded entrance into the MC Enlisted Educational Program.
Basically the officers didn't like me being enlisted.

So I ended up back at UCLA, sober, and graduated.

After, led to a job on Wall Street. 9/11 was the beginning of the end for me on Wall Street.

Getting the pieces of my confusing posts in place?

God, I haven't even met you and I told you stuff that I never even told my wife!

PS...she still works on Wall Street. She would never have even dated me if she knew the real story.

Is this considered "too much information?"

I don't think it's too much information at all. I appreciate you sharing. It's nice getting to know about one another on here. I know a lot of members on this forum also post details that they haven't even told the closest people in their lives.

ps. I usually stay on SR late at night till I'm about to fall asleep as well.

Hi Snarly
Generally whatever our members want to share is fine

It is good to remember tho that this is an open forum - anything you do share can be read by anyone, or searched through Google or other search engines.

Hi Cajun Princess (love that name!)

Nice to "meet" you as well.

Funny - seems "thank you for your service" here means a lot.

I live in Jersey City Heights, NJ and literally see the World Trade Center from the roof of the building I live in.

In NYC....the few times someone has bothered to say that to me it sounds like "bless you" after you sneeze.

I am fortunate that I have been self motivated to make enough money independently ... but I continue to post my resume and show up to interviews hoping to land a more permanent position.

Interviews usually start with a fairly young person from HR....they review my resume - get to the part about Marines (pause) and give me a startled look and then the underwhelming mumbled "thank you for your service".

Sometimes I think it would be better if I deleted it. Not many Manhattan yuppies have done service nor understand what it means.

I think that is why I have held on to a dual persona - me in Suits, me with my real and want to be biker friends.

Damn.... triggered more over share. Was about to delete, but it sucks that this really happens.

Happy Birthday Snarly! Hope you keep coming back to post. I really got something out of your thread. I also found out who my real friends are when "the chips were down" The ones that came looking for a drinking buddy weren't the good ones. The ones rushing to help put a life in order so that rehab could happen are irreplaceable.

Anal brain screams to I need to re-read everything I posted.

FYI:

I've done a ton of work behind the scenes building queries for search optimization.

I just ran a few simple and some complex queries in a couple of search engines.

Search engines usually hone in web sites and content that is flagged.

Otherwise, they have fairly complex formulas to try and determine the most relevant content to anyone doing a simple search.

Where the search engines make real money is from paying customers who DEMAND accuracy, relevance and time sensitive content. They use very complex queries to drill down to that type of content.

So short answer is I did not flag any content and this site has a very impressive posting volume.

If I had started a separate thread for each of my in depth posts - the web crawlers might pick it up....not at the response level.

Gov agencies - now that is a different discussion.

Just my 2 cents.

Yep ... I'm back.

mega 45ish minute sleep....uggghhh

Well it's my Bday and I'll stay awake if I want to.

I have a song stuck in my head:

Ozzie's line: Wine is fine, but Whiskeys Quicker. Suicide is slow with liquor

I have no idea how that got there - I stream Pandora and created an Amy Winehouse feed that I have been listening to all day.
Very mellow and relaxing. Showcases Amy's amazing stuff and blends complimentary artists. Picture 50's smoky cabaret ....even tho I gave up smoking years ago!

Hey hold the press.....

Does a cat count as a friend?

If so, I really haven't been alone.

My cat, roommate really. We're the odd couple.

She just hopped in my lap. Made me smile and also sad at the same time.

Yep and one more regret that I have neglected her during my bender and even during these days struggling to stay sober. I fed her, litter, etc but not much else.

Caramel,

Love that duet!!!!!

Here's a little odd fact for those that are the main course for mosquito buffet:

put scotch tape on each of the bites. It will stop the itching and if applied early enough will even pull out the lovely gift the sceeters inject. Leave it on until it falls off. Amazing how effective this is.

Really - sceeters have decided to gift me with lots of bites tonight.

Good afternoon,

Just woke up from a 4 hour nap and guess what was playing:

Amy Winehouse: Rehab....tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no

Thought I was dreaming!

Half way through the day.

A couple of door buzzes...been there done that. Not even phased by it. No desire to answer it. Simple right????

No immediate panic, nothing. Go figure. Yawn and back to sleep.

Thanks everyone for your support. Truly hump Wednesday and 7th inning stretch.

Hi SoberWolf,

That's interesting. I know quinine was/is used to treat malaria.

Not sure if it legal to get in the US without a prescription.

Anyways, I've used the tape for years and I am highly allergic to just about anything that stings. I carry an epipen. Once got stung by a bee riding my bike and was just barely able to get off the road in time to stick myself.

Nice to think about something else now and again.

Another side note:
I was stationed over in England at the Marine Barracks in London and also the Barracks down in Newquay Cornwall (who knew they were part of the International Surf circuit).

I was fortunate enough to do an exchange program with the Royal Marines out of Ipswitch. Now that was intimidating! I was a corporal at the time.
Imagine this: I was 20ish at the time and billeted with the NCO's in the Royal Marines. Most of them had 20+ years service and some of the toughest men I worked with. I survived a two month field training exercise (most of them were betting against the yank).

I participated with them during the annual Edinburg Military Tattoo.
One of the most memorable weeks of my life. We were given tours of areas that the general public never sees.

Great memories!

Thanks!

SoberWolf,

Thanks again. I have been sitting here and remembering so many of the adventures I had in the UK and Europe.

The Marine Barracks in Newquay was actually an internal base within RAF ST Mawgan. When I was there it was famous for the Nimrod.

I took one flight. We took off, landed in Ireland and came right back. That plane flies fast enough to rip its own wings off and went to incredible altitude.

There was a bet....whoever barfed had to buy drinks. Well, all the yanks barfed. The RAF staff was used to the G force. We had no idea what was in store for us!

All good fun. Everything I remember involved heavy drinking. Drinks on base were super cheap.

Another memory: I was allowed to live off base and I ended buying a 1962 MGB roadster. The adventures I had in that. I used to go to our Postal Exchange (base store) and I would buy bottles of Jack Daniels and Marlboros . I would load up the trunk, grab a buddy and head out.

We bartered the Jack and fags for entrance to clubs and free booze. Worked out great for everyone.

My most memorable road trip was to Tintagel to see the King Arthurs Castle. Fantastic. I even did the climb down to Merlin's cavern.

Next would be Stonehenge. Somewhat disappointed - don't know what I expected. Maybe if we went at night we could party with a Druid?

Oh .. last one. We went to St Michael's Mount and waited for the high tide to make the castle an island. How cool is that. I am huge fan of anything related to King Arthur and Merlin

Thanks again - I haven't thought about this for years.
