Stay Sober Here - All Welcome ... Weekender June 5
I am! Lots of fun- I'll update shortly- I'm just waiting to see if I can sync my photos on ipad for you guys.
I hope so- if not I'll post photos when I get home
Awwww! That's awesome graced!!
Ok, it doesn't appear I can post photos yet- sometimes my ipad won't sync for a couple hours though.
So where I last left you all.....
Long post ahead.
So as I mentioned I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to tell Roanoke that I was in the deep south.... For a whole host of reasons I won't get into.
But I did, and there was no way I could come to the deep south and not stop in- I'd be disowned.
So I emailed him and told him- he said he he would wait for me to drive there.
He's an interesting guy- just my type haha
Was in the military- in Somalia; he also served about 5 years in prison...:/
( I have friends in low places....)
He's all straight now though and has been for a while.
He has a military injury that leaves him with a bad limp ( which I like) and his father died of AIDS- no mother.
He's just what you'd expect from small town central Alabama- lives in a trailer outside of town (which he keeps really clean- I was impressed!)
Has guns, fishes, hunts, prison tattoos, thick southern accent.
He doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs ( but he used to years ago)
Though he has a killer old time recipe for moonshine; which he makes and sells.
I didn't drink any haha, but he showed me how it's done.
I followed my map along seconday backroads and made it to Roanoke just fine!
Took about 3-4 hours.
Beautiful landscape and I listend to country music loud the whole way- stopping to look at stuff, take breaks etc.
I got Roanoke and he met me along the highway and took me back to his house.
I had a shower and then we went out for BBQ- really great food that's smoked outside around back!!! Yum!!!
Huge portions and we took the rest home.
It was so hot and I was really tired from travel the day before and a bad sleep- so we went back to his house and I had a nap.
He woke me up in the evening and took me to the chatahoochie river (sic?)and we went swimming until sundown, then he took me for a ride through the backroads to listen to music and look at fireflies.
windows down, barefeet out the window, country music and well lived man beside me= Paradise.
We talked about our lives- my travels, AIDS, Somalia, life, love, music, food.
Then we went back to his house and ate leftover BBQ with our hands, a roll of paper towel and had a criminal minds watching marathon.
Then naturally I made love with him till late.
I woke up this morning and hit the road.
He invited me back at the end of my trip because Roanoke is only 90 mins from Atlanta.
I might go back.
I'll be back to tell all of you what I did today!

He's the brother of one of my pen pals- there I said it.
I'm not dead so I can tell you guys now.
I've known him about 3 ( or 2 maybe) years though- my pen pal put me in touch with him years ago when they were on lockdown at the prison, so I could let his family know.

Behan, hang in there.
Graced33, great news about the graduation.
Wow, Mesa. You're starting to remind me of Bill Murray vs. The Varmint Cong in "Caddyshack." Except you're winning.
Glad to hear you're having a good time in the South, Bodhi. When you get to New Orleans, be sure to check out the Spotted Cat Music Club and the Blue Nile on Frenchman's Street.
The second of my consecutive evenings spent in watering holes at going-away parties is over and done. I'm fine but I'm doggone glad not to have any more events like this in my future.

Trach, I saw Kermit Ruffins there last year. Really fun!
So Trach and Bodhi, did the two of you connect when B. was in Georgia? I've been fortunate enough to meet a couple friends from my SR class, as well as our dear Marty, and really relished the meetings.

Ok- and as for today-
I left Roanoke and drove backroads to selma and checked out the civil rights interpretive centre!
I visited a couple sites there, and decided to head to Birmingham on the advice of the American history people there- they said there's a great civil rights museum as well as a fantastic art museum; so that's why I'm just outside Birmingham.
On my way I stopped at river and walked all the way out to the middle!
The water was so warm and it wasn't deep- this is rarely the case in Canada.
Anyway, there was an old guy fishing there and we started chatting for a while, he asked me where I was headed and I said " I don't really know"
He said " well I guess you'll know when you get there"
Truth.
Anyway, I've been enjoying chatting with and meeting all kinds of folks along the way and everyone has been so charming and nice.

Not yet Ven ( trach) I'm hoping to tag up with him on my last night.
There, now trach is on the spot haha
I will ven.
I'm sorry to be annoying; but I accidentally erased that PM where you told me cool stuff to do in new orleans- if you get any free time in the next couple days- do you mind sending it again? :/
I have a couple days until I arrive.
Tomorrow I'm doing the history stuff in Birmingham and the headed to that delta blues museum in Mississippi

Here's a little something to whet your appetite, featuring the Blue Nile. It's from one of my all-time favorite TV shows, Treme. In it, there's something of a musical rivalry between Kermit and the fictitious Antoine Batiste.
Wish I could teleport myself, Jen. We'd have fun on Frenchman's Street. You can hang out there sober all night. The French Quarter, on the other hand, is for drunk tourists.
Also envy you driving through the South just to explore. It's something both the former flame and I had in common, a desire to do just that.

Ugh it's so annoying, I can't get the pics to sync with my ipad- I don't want to post 1000 pics when I get home, I wanted to do it along the way.
I'm gonna keep trying.
I have a few really cool ones for civil rights history buffs too.
I specifically took them with readable signs in selma.

I'm glad you're having fun, Jen. Please keep checking in as frequently as possible. Be safe! Make good decisions! Carry pepper spray! And maybe a gun! And full body armor! Do I sound like a Mom yet, haha! I worry, I can't help it. Your kind of fun gets my nerves frazzled. I'm glad it's fun for you but it's scary for me bc I think other people are often dirtbags. I can't see them so I'm automatically suspicious. I trust you but I don't trust them. I know how smart you are, so I'm not trying to sound condescending. Ok what about a protective bubble? Hazmat suit? That would work!
Will you see trach soon? It'll be so special to hear if you two are able to meet up! That thought really tickles me.
Has anyone heard from BixBees?
I'm on the couch with the expected gastrointestinal waterslide bubble guts I expected from having oily broth. It was delicious and worth it bc bathroom thug life.
I think I'm staying on this couch for the rest of the night. Beekeeping wiped me out.
I booked a trip for Bali for 2017 a couple minutes ago. Needed a little excitement in my internal life, something to look forward to and a goal for saving money. I had enough for the small deposit, and the rest I'll have to manifest by getting off my butt and becoming gainfully employed bc I want to go to MF BALI!
Xoxo

Send me a postcard Bodhi! I'll pm my post box to you!
And speaking of postcards....
Stopped by the box today and there were two from Russia, one from Finland and this one from Portugal.
Portugal sounds like an amazing place to visit!

A life dream come true!
A quick question for iphone ipad people.
I have my phone to take photos but it has no actual service in USA- it's essentially just a camera now- normally my iphone photos sync with ipad within a couple hours- is this why I'm not getting my phone photos on ipad?
I can just start taking photos on my ipad instead, save the headache
