A lot of those hard living, whiskey drinking country musicians eventually sobered up, including Steve Earle. Townes Van Zandt was one of the greatest song writers of all time in my opinion, and unfortunately he died of complications resulting from alcoholism. Apparently he was so far down at one point he offered to sell his entire catalog of music for $20 so he could buy some whiskey.

I was watching CMT a few weeks ago and Brantley Gilbert was on. They played his video for Bottoms Up and then interviewed him. She asked, "did you turn a few bottoms up before you wrote that song?" (insinuating he may have been drunk when he wrote it). He answered, "No, Ma'am, I haven't had a drink in more than 2 years."
Morrissee is sober and an active member of AA. Someone who was at one of my meetings was at a Seattle meeting with him.
Penn Jillette is sober. In fact, if i recall correctly, he has never touch alcohol. That's damn impressive, being that he's a successful Vegas magician

I find it inspiring to hear about these folks.
So many times I read where folks in recovery are worried about what to tell people if they're offered a drink in social settings
Joe Walsh, Ringo, Tom Waits, David Bowie, Eminem and 50 Cent… I mean, I just can't imagine them having any problem telling ANYONE "No thanks - I don't drink."
