I use the thanks button for all sorts of things. Like when someone says something that helps me or provides a new perspective. Or when someone says something that I would have said. Or when someone says something that IMO was an effort to support another person. I am not certain how the thanks button might hinder recovery.
Most of the tme, I couldn't put it better, so I hit thanks.
sometimes it's so close to home I'm stuck for what to say, so i hit thanks
sometimes the post is so good and suportive, so I hit thanks
sometimes the post makes me stop and think, so I hit thanks
sometimes I just think that person has taken the time to post, spill their guts, tell their life story, shared something that was difficult or helped someone else, so I hit thanks
sometimes someone got no response, so I hit thanks.
How on earth it hinders recovery I have no idea. But thanks anyway.

Because in the formulation of a response, new insights will often flow.
I have been observing for a few weeks and it seems that the posts with the most responses are the ones that feed into the drama and the ones on the recovery type topics get thanks, but no discussion.
Seems arse backwards to me.
I get the thanks for the I couldn't put it better posts. But doesn't it reach a dead end, there? Recovery topics are HUGE with almost infinite words to say.

I love that there is a "thanks" button here. I wish there was one on the other board I frequent. If someone doesn't want to use it, then they don't have to, but I think most people like having the option.

You're all missing the point.
Thanking a post is easy. Thinking about it and posting a reply is helpful for the OP and formulates one's own thought process and helps analyse one's own situation. Even if you don't agree (in fact, that may be more important). I'm sure they have enough server space! And I don't mean wading into another person's situation and telling them what to do, although I know I have done (and still do) enough of that myself.
Was just running through the last few days threads, that's all.

Maybe you don't need to go anywhere from thanks. I am always amazed when something I wrote gets a bunch of thanks. I often feel like I cannot possibly be contributing that much so on the occasion that I get response like that, it makes me feel good that Hey! I must have made sense! Or I get the feeling that Hey! someone understood me! It feels good to be understood or to have contributed or maybe something I said was helpful.
