Exam question: The Thanks button

Hinders recovery on SR.

Discuss.

dollydo 09-25-2010 04:13 PM

Sometimes I have nothing to add or some posts are just an update that require no response. Thus I hit the thanks button.

Why would it hinder recovery??

Learn2Live 09-25-2010 04:18 PM

I use the thanks button for all sorts of things. Like when someone says something that helps me or provides a new perspective. Or when someone says something that I would have said. Or when someone says something that IMO was an effort to support another person. I am not certain how the thanks button might hinder recovery.

LucyA 09-25-2010 04:23 PM

Most of the tme, I couldn't put it better, so I hit thanks.
sometimes it's so close to home I'm stuck for what to say, so i hit thanks
sometimes the post is so good and suportive, so I hit thanks
sometimes the post makes me stop and think, so I hit thanks
sometimes I just think that person has taken the time to post, spill their guts, tell their life story, shared something that was difficult or helped someone else, so I hit thanks
sometimes someone got no response, so I hit thanks.

How on earth it hinders recovery I have no idea. But thanks anyway.

Bolina 09-25-2010 04:24 PM

Because in the formulation of a response, new insights will often flow.

I have been observing for a few weeks and it seems that the posts with the most responses are the ones that feed into the drama and the ones on the recovery type topics get thanks, but no discussion.

Seems arse backwards to me.

I get the thanks for the I couldn't put it better posts. But doesn't it reach a dead end, there? Recovery topics are HUGE with almost infinite words to say.

Feeling grateful and expressing gratitude, in whatever way large or small that we can, is a pillar of recovery!
Peace-

What L2L said (that's why I hit the thanks button).

Some people just look for things to be offended or worried over.

Personally, I've got MUCH more important things to do.

Bolina 09-25-2010 04:28 PM

Not offended or worried at all. Was just pondering.

When was the last time you saw a post that coincided with the topic of your last meeting?

Learn2Live 09-25-2010 04:36 PM

Those that want to, seek recovery. To me, SR is more about support. Whether or not an individual chooses to seek recovery is their choice.

Bolina 09-25-2010 04:40 PM

Oh. OK.

So, maybe it doesn't hinder recovery. It certainly hinders discussion, though. Where do you go from a thanks?

suki44883 09-25-2010 04:41 PM

I love that there is a "thanks" button here. I wish there was one on the other board I frequent. If someone doesn't want to use it, then they don't have to, but I think most people like having the option.

HealingWillCome 09-25-2010 04:43 PM

Discussion hindered? Around here? A bunch of codies not speaking up? :)

That's why I love this place. Someone always has something to say. I learn every single day here.

Bolina 09-25-2010 04:47 PM

You're all missing the point.

Thanking a post is easy. Thinking about it and posting a reply is helpful for the OP and formulates one's own thought process and helps analyse one's own situation. Even if you don't agree (in fact, that may be more important). I'm sure they have enough server space! And I don't mean wading into another person's situation and telling them what to do, although I know I have done (and still do) enough of that myself.

Was just running through the last few days threads, that's all.

Learn2Live 09-25-2010 04:48 PM

Maybe you don't need to go anywhere from thanks. I am always amazed when something I wrote gets a bunch of thanks. I often feel like I cannot possibly be contributing that much so on the occasion that I get response like that, it makes me feel good that Hey! I must have made sense! Or I get the feeling that Hey! someone understood me! It feels good to be understood or to have contributed or maybe something I said was helpful.

Bolina 09-25-2010 04:50 PM

I get that, L2L. I wonder how much more affirming it would be to branch off discussion from the points you raised in your posts, though. And get some real words behind the affirmation of a thanks.

HealingWillCome 09-25-2010 04:52 PM

Sometimes there is just nothing further to say. Just like any face to face conversation. It's very seldom (maybe never?) that I see anyone's original post or later posts ignored...

coyote21 09-25-2010 04:52 PM

What L2L and LucyA and HWC said. And thank god I don't have any other boards to frequent, this one is enough of an obsession.

Thanks and God bless us all,
Coyote

HealingWillCome 09-25-2010 04:55 PM

this one is enough of an obsession.
Could have just hit the thanks button, but that made me laugh...thought you should know. Yep, I should be doing about 12 other things in my house right now.
