Two quick comments:

1) For me, I must've had hundreds of Day Ones. I think my first AA meeting was when I was... 27? I was never able to put together more than about a week, seriously. I am 36 now.

2) I found this poll and some of the responses to be incredibly helpful. Maybe some of is are very slow learners, but it's nice to hear that for some of us it eventually stuck.

Most people on here who are long time sober have one thing in common. They made a serious attempt and actually wanted to quit. They decided that they had enough of drink. Yes, I tried many times, but I can honestly say that until I made a real commitment and quit lying to myself it stuck. You may say to everyone else that you are quitting and even try to tell yourself that, but until you really feel it in your heart it's fruitless.

I don't know yet. It's my first attempt and I'm over 5 months in. I hope so!

I have voted no but I guess I can say yes.

I quit the first time I actually accepted the fact that I would never drink alcohol again. And I was okay with that. Thrilled? Oh heck no. I was okay with it.

The physical and mental torment had become too much.

Every other failed attempt before that I kept this idea in the very very back of my mind that I might drink again someday.

On a side note, I tried to moderate hundreds of times. Hundreds.

I lost count of how many attempts I made, but I finally got it. The main thing is to NOT give up. Keep trying, don't ever stop trying, and you will get it!

Nope. It took me a while. Main reason was that I was doing it wrong. I wanted to be sober but didn't believe I could be. Which became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Once I got to the point that I CAN do it, it became a lot easier.

It still took work. Reading and posting here. Which was one of the reasons I succeeded. The other one was making a plan. The third was being just plain stubborn. I refuse to put alcohol in my body, no matter what anyone says.

You know, it can be done. Whoever you are. Where ever you are. It can be done. YOU can do it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you amino acids!!!! I didn't need my head shrunk, didn't need to make any lists, just needed my brain chemistry set straight. Can't get over the miracle. Glory goes upstairs, as always!
Hi what do you mean your amino acids?
