You mentioned you're really looking forward to seeing the grandkids. Can you maybe designate yourself as babysitter, and organize various activities to take the kids to, while the parents party it up? Take them bowling, swimming, to the local zoo if there is one, etc.

Get to kill two birds with one stone. Spend quality time with your grandkids, and remove yourself from the drinking.

Hi Flyn!

Oh you are going to have a great time! Last summer I had a big out of town family wedding over a 3 day stretch. I just took my time, enjoyed being in the moment and ended up having a fantastic sober time.

I took on an explorer mentality. Wherever the celebration went, I went and explored. And I had SR at my fingertips as well.. The wedding and reception was in a gorgeous location with great weather so I ended up hanging outside and conversing a lot. The only awkward moment was the first time I went to the bar for soda and lemon. Then poof! It was all about great conversation and exploration. Oh, and the desserts and coffee. Wow. They never tasted so good.

As far as me not drinking. No one in the extended family noticed or cared.

Cannot wait to hear how it goes for you!

Hi Fly:

I think that you are ready. Have an exit plan. Keep SR open in your phone and step aside for a second and read or take a peek when you go to the bathroom. Think about it. You are going to be present, not feel crappy, remember everything, do everyone a favor by being DD. This is the you that YOU want to be and others will admire you. What a great example for the children in your family. Almost a year is amazing.

I made it home late last night and as promised here's a pic of a National Park located in the Sonoran Desert = SW States. Sunday morning coming down, early. Just after sunrise I made a sober Sonoran sojourn, communing with whistling quail, cooing doves and saluting saguaro cactus! Grand!

I appreciate all the reinforcing kind words and sharing of experience - made things a lot easier. Frankly, just reminded me of behaviors that are in the past and who no longer wish to be.

Change is indeed possible. Support for me is essential - Thank you friends!!

I was able to enjoy a very special time with my family, be privy to a beautiful. foothill-sunset wedding affair while engaged with others in the moment. Never would have given myself hope this was every possible. In one short year it has come to fruition - for today

Warm Regards,
FlyNbuy

I've seen different parts of the Sonoran Desert. It's very beautiful and, the only way to truly admire the scenery is sober. Glad you had a good trip.

Thanks, Flynbuy!

As we start gaining sober time, the reflection on how far we've come is a moment of peaceful joy.

So great to see this accomplishment shared here -- yet another example of what's possible when we choose sobriety.
