Day Four

Hello everybody. I'm 47 and have been a heavy drinker for probably 23 years or so ( at least 8-10 drinks a day ) . My best friend died last month from cirrhosis at 50 and I figure I'm not far behind if I don't change. Not sure how bad I've damaged my body yet, had a CT Scan last week so guess I'll find out. Sitting at my desk at work feeling tired and distracted. Anyway, I'm trying never to have a drink again.

Hi.
Four days is a good start, congratulations.
I needed to get honest with myself about my drinking and accept the fact I can no longer drink in safety one day at a time in a row in safety.

I also needed the help of people who understood other alcoholics and were there to guide me into recovery.

This site also has some very good people with good suggestions and sober time behind them. At times we don’t like to hear/do what’s suggested but many times it’s necessary to listen and at least try.
For instance I was told I needed to get sober for me first, forget the family, job and whatever as those things will align themselves once we heal. They were correct because without sobriety all else is gone as proven so often on these forums.

BE WELL

Welcome to SR, fejjh. I am glad that you are here with us. I drank approximately the same amount as you did, for about the same length of time as you did, and quit at about the same age as you. That was 20 months ago. I quit on the day that I found SR, and I haven't had a drink since then.

I tell you this only so that you know that quitting is possible, even after drinking as much and for as long as you (we) have. And life is much, much better on this side of the bottle.

Good luck. I hope you will post often and let us know how you are doing.

Hello all,
Day 5. Good news, labs and CT Scan are perfect...how that happened is beyond me. No intention on picking up the bottle again, my red face and spider veins are actually looking better. Thanks for the support and I will post from time to time.

Day 6. Geeez the amount of energy I have now is crazy. It was a chore to not drink last night since my tests came back fine, but I didn't and don't intend to. Been smoking like a chimney though, but one thing at a time.
