Thank you everyone for underscoring the importance of the day yesterday. There is no greater milestone in my life at this time and there are so few I can share it with. To have this little corner of the world that totally knows me (without actually knowing me at all) is one of the places in my world I hold so dear.
For those struggling today. One tool that got me through the early days. Accept the struggle, the anxiety, the shakes, the hot/cold sweats, the sleeplessness, the tears, the instability, all of. Just accept it. I always envision myself a soldier, slogging through the muddy waters, with a gun and a helmet in the war on those days. It's an image that illustrates just how intense this all is. 'I cannot f-ing do this!' I say to myself. And then the small but powerful voice speaks up, 'You're in a war and not everyone survives but you'll survive today, just keep walking,' and that's what I do. Strap on your gun and your helmet, there's a war out there.
Together we can piece together a program that works for each of us as individuals and layer by layer, day by day, we rebuild and become what our drunk selves always insisted we were, strong, functional, satisfied, whole people.
One Year and One Day sober.

I LOVED this story. It illustrates perfectly that, by combining self-awareness, planning, strength and determination, we CAN win this war. We can survive and succeed.
