Im so low!

Not feeling good today gang! Day 6 here, went into the city with a friend and waited in the car for him whilst he attended an appointment, had an anxiety attack, and just feel REALLY depressed! Like a dark blackness hanging over me. I was SO close to drinking but I have not caved! But this depression is just frightening and so overwhelming!

Ahhhh sigh here I am day 6!

But you didn't! I know that doesn't negate the depression, and I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so low, but you should still be proud that you kept sober through those feelings.

Big hugs, and congrats on day 6!

Hi Chilledice, keep strong and well done for not picking up a drink.

If you feel too bad have you spoken to your doctor.

It's okay to cry, it's not okay to drink! I did a lot of crying when I first got sober, it's okay.

rid it out Chilled. You have victory today knowing you did not drink. Take solace in that alone.

Stick with sobriety Chilledice,it will only get worse if you pick up again, the good news if you stay sober it will get better.

If you continue to feel depressed get checked out by your GP.Sobriety should be joyful, not an endurance test.

Hi Chilled. I'm so sorry for what you're going through.

I had the same feeling early in my recovery. I had relied on alcohol to get me through, & used it to alter my mood for many years. When I stopped it took awhile to adjust to dealing with reality. It's so much better being clear headed - but it does take some time to make the adjustment. It's normal & quite common.

I agree that you should check with your doctor if things don't begin to look up.

How long does it usually take for the depression to lift? Did you feel better mentally after a few weeks or?

Im scared about anti depressants , the side effects are often suicidal feelings!

I had been drinking for many years, and in the end I drank every day - so I was a mess. It took me about a week to feel like part of the human race again. After that I still felt sorry for myself and resentful - but everything eased up and got so much better after a month. We go through many phases as we heal.

Can you get yourself up and around? Some days I make plans by the hour to keep busy. Even giving the dogs a bath feels like an accomplishment and being busy makes the time go faster. I'm also having the depression and irritability/anxiety. I cry and also let myself get the anger out. Stuffed feelings are coming to the surface. Some really good days, some not so good. I call it an emotional breakup and I know in time I'll level out and so will you.

Go ahead and have a good cry....really let it loose....it's the soul cleansing itself..."the cure for anything is salt water--the sea, sweat, or tears...." Being so sad and depressed is such a overwhelming feeling, remember, it's just a bad day, not a bad life. Sobriety is a wonderful, painful, journey...buckle up and get ready for the ride! All the best.

Nothing wrong with a good sober cry or lots of them. I think its making up for the lost time when we didn't really feel any emotions

Stay strong
