I'm celebrating 13 months in a few days all by myself. Not saying AA is bad but it's not for me. I think alcoholism can be dealt with differently for different people. 12 step is not my cup of tea. But if it works for someone great. For me, it was a decision and acceptance that enough is enough. Until you get to that acceptance it's fruitless in my opinion. I tried for 20 plus years with failure. This time I have a complete willingness to not drink. Before I thought I did but I think that deep down I still thought I could moderate. Good luck with whatever method you use.

I think it is a matter of words. In my opinion, problem drinker and alcoholic are synonimous. An alcoholic is a person who suffers problems because of his drinking, and cannot stop. Just the same as a problem drinker. There are many kinds of alcoholics: week end alcoholic, 24 hours alcoholic, ...
So, I'm alcoholic and am sober without AA. 19 months sober.
