Welcome David! You've done a hard thing coming here and telling us your story. Now, stick around. I came here the day or two after my last drink, and here I am 2 years sober. You can do it!

I've always had reservations about AA. my friend gave me the original book i think was written by the founder of AA. when the God speak kicked in i threw the book in the trash... I felt like i was being coerced into swapping one addiction with another. Also many people would roll in to the AA under the influence, and we'd go for a drink after... I've been to groups where you take a breath test on the way in. zero tolerance on. blow even 0.1 and you are out, but these are rare
David, there's no shortage of threads here about folks reluctant to join AA because of religion. There's even a chapter for agnostics in the Big Book. You will find that identifying a higher power that can restore you to sanity is a central theme to Alcoholics Anonymous. You are certainly not alone!
