Welcome, good place to start.
What do you want to know?
Are you willing to put some effort into laying off the sauce?
What are you willing to do?
I went to the ends of the earth to change the way I felt. I walked through blizzards and snow storms to get the special sauce. I did unimaginable things to get the poison. I drank because I loved the effect it gave me. I stood 10 feet tall and I was invisable. I was the supreme being, bossman universal, no one could bring me down. Except booze brought me down each and every time. Yet I kept on doing the same old things, thinking I could beat the game. See the issue here is the thinking is totally wrong. I had to change it. The drinking had nothing to do with my problem. The thinking was way out there. Knowing all I know about what happens when I drink, yet I continue to take the drink thinking it will be different this time. It never is. Its time to put the bottle down and achieve sobriety. You can be just as sick not drinking as drinking, if you do not change the way you think. This is a simple program for complicated people. Its hard, tough work, but it works if you want it bad enough and follow some simple suggestions.

Start out, Chevota, by taking it one day at a time; vow not to drink tonight; tomorrow, vow not to drink all day.
You mentioned a Sponsor; I always think AA when someone says "sponsor". I personally have no experience with AA but there are many people on SR who do.
There are many paths to sobriety; keep exploring until you find one that feels right for you.
I always find that knowledge is empowering - you know, understanding the enemy. There are lots of great articles on this site on alcoholism; explore the site.
Keep posting; someone is always here to help.

Only you can decide if AA is right for you; I wouldn't rule it out on anyone else's experience; what is important is finding what works for you. Many people have reached sustained sobriety with AA and many have reached it outside of AA.
Chevota, I second SoberLeigh's advice. Even 20 years ago places like this forum didn't exist. We are really lucky to have access to a broad array of recovery methods and concepts, and the best part is that SR is here 24/7! Stick around, read, post. Maybe consider joining the March 2014 thread. It is a group of people who are all trying to get sober this month. Sometimes it can be helpful to have a smaller group to help you get started on your journey.
Welcome!
Welcome!
Many of us are or were. Alcoholics come in many "shapes and sizes" so to speak with varied drinking patterns; the commonality among us, however, is that drinking moderately or occasionally almost overwhelmingly doesn't work for us. One drink leads to two and so on. It's a slippery slope.
Hi Chevota! Good on you for taking action. I went to my second AA meeting today, and it and the first one yesterday have helped me so far. I met some wonderful, incredibly supportive people. I'm only finishing up Day 2 (again!), and AA might not end up being for me in the long run, but it certainly can't hurt you to try!
