Addictive Personality
Addictive Personality
I've been thinking about things as I taper down and await my doctor appt on January 14th.
I've been drinking for 35 years and if I now detox on benzodiazepines, and live through this all, then I'm addicted to Valium or whatever. Uh.
I'm just scared to hell. Already.............

I've detoxed off alcohol like 5 or 6 times on benzos and had no addiction to them whatsoever. And I was instructed by doctor to take quite a bit of them. It wasn't used to replace alcohol. It just up-regulates your GABA receptors the same way alcohol does while your body detoxifies from alcohol. Usually the goal is to only use them a short amount of time.
Thanks Skye2, you guys are the best. I'm anxious for my appt.
Thanks Justin. I've been doing some reading and I can't believe the amount of librium/valium they may be giving me. It's like you could o'd on that amount. Please don't laugh at me. I managed to drink lots of booze but can't imagine taking so much benzo. What will I do, sleep finally? lol.

I slept like a baby on it. I took like 275mg one day. It was doctor ordered.
My feet and hands got really cold while taking it.
I drank one day during a benzo detox (just shows how bad addiction is)
Anyway, I almost died because benzos and alcohol share cross tolerance. In other words I was basically double drunk. Please dont make that mistake.
Almost stopped breathing.

Scott is totally right. And I did the exact same thing Scott did. Went to ER with heart attack symptoms, was given IV Librium, stayed for a few hours and went home. Now that I've been with a doctor its been oral form.

Won't 275 mg kill a person? I've had only uppers of 20 mg before an MRI. Of course I only felt tired and relaxed but did fall asleep in the tube for a little spell. No pun intended on that word.
You were at home to drink on the benzos then?
After what you guys are telling me, I think I'm definitely not doing this all on my own again.
I can't do a 30 day in patient setting though with my other responsibilities. I could probably manage a weekend or ER trip. Uh. Wish this were behind me.

GABA in short is an amino acid. You have GABA receptors in your brain where the gaba binds too. When you get drunk, your brain releases dopamine and gaba (happy happy) is created from the dopamine. This triggers your brains pleasure system. Over repeated time your brain gets used to this dopamine and being in a depressive state.
So essentially when you quit drinking, you have that lack of gaba. This leads to neurological changes. Hence detox. Detox is the period of time where your brain adjusts to that lack of gaba. There are other things going on, but benzos raise that gaba level until your body and brain has adapted to the change.
The thought is you take benzos for a few days, and when detox is over with, you're done with both. I might be wrong on some of that but that's my understanding.
