And it begins...

Well... here I am on Day one of sobriety. I've been wanting to quit drinking for... well probably a year. I'm so tired. I'm tired of wasting money. I'm tired of hangovers. I'm tired of not being able to read books anymore or do things I love. I'm tired of losing jobs and flunking out of college classes because I'm too hungover to show up. Mostly-- I'm tired of missing out on time with my family.

I'm almost 26 years old, and I've been drinking 10+ drinks a day for the past three years. I know if this continues, I'll be living with even more regret and depression than I have now.

I'm bipolar, and I don't have any medications. I've used alcohol as a crutch to self medicate with and it became a habit I couldn't get away from. Today-- I start being sober. In the past three years, with all of my attempts at quitting-- I never made it past the third day. Well... I'm hoping to post here on day five and tell you all I'm still sober.

I need support, so here I am. I look forward to reading information here and getting to know you all.

Welcome to SR.

There is quite a variety of methods members here use to stay sober. Read around the various forums to learn about them, and then find the one that will work best for you. Best of Luck!

I was in the same boat as you, as I am also bipolar. It made me drink to feel normal. And it worked. For awhile, then, I spiraled into the throughs of addiction.
I've managed to stay sober for two years five months.
I was a great one for not showing up, too. All the lost opportunities lost.

I suggest you get treatment for your illness. Most all counties have mental health clinics. I've never had to pay a dime for excellent treatment I've received for my mental illness.

I feel for you because I've been there. But you can get sober if you have the willingness.

Keep post here do whatever it takes don't use bipolar as an excuse to drink anymore.

Best to you.

Good luck to the both of you MzMcCoy and gettinglifeback, it always makes me happy to hear of people wanting to change themselves.....some never even attempt to. It's not going to be easy because it is so worth it. Stay strong.

I'm glad you're ready to change your life. We are here for support.

It seems like it would be a good idea to talk to your dr about the bipolar disease and to hopefully get it treated.
