For me, the fact that people here "get it," veterans of sobriety and those on 1 or 2 days is huge. I come here and if I read or post, I feel like I'm in the company of people who share the same struggle. Once I saw this massive global (literally) commuinty, bam, I decided to fight this beast like I never fought before. Sorry for the martial metaphors, but I feel like I am part of an army battling a common enemy. This kind of mentality works for me: My friends and I, we are fighting for our lives.

Also, being able to try (I do not know if I truly do, but my intentions are ALL good) and help others, even as a voice of support and understanding, is something I truly appriciate. I think this has made a huge difference in my recovery this time around.

Thank you SR and everyone here!

Great thread. Wish the Tuesday/Friday online meetings would have had a category all their own, though. They are great.

Also am grateful for:
- Dee. Every word he shares is wise and straight from the heart.
- Opi and Heather. They do a fantastic job chairing the Tuesday/Friday meetings.
- Posts from the veterans. Their street cred is truly appreciated.
- Posts from the newer folks who share their quest for sobriety and recovery.
- Monthly class. I may be partial, but mine is *the best.*
- Friendships. We relate to people here who can understand us better in some ways than people we've known all our lives.

My only relative sadness? I didn't discover SR a long time ago.

Where did SR come from?

I like the 24/7 access. Additionally, I'm very shy, so I appreciate the opportunity to receive guidance/support without having to face others in person. I feel comfortable here, grateful to be with those who really understand how devastating alcohol is (yet also realize how hard it can be to give up).

My answers to this survey have also changed over time. Sobriety changes as recovery continues, I am finding.

From the poll:

Primarily 1 and 3, and 4. I'll probably get into the game threads more later.

Freeform:
  • The people, all of them: the newcomers, beginners, adepts, sages and humorists (curmudgeons and whiners, too!), from town and country (and riverboat), all around the globe
  • The variety of backgrounds, approaches and tips
  • The repetition of useful advice and experience from different people and angles
  • The convenience and 24/7 availability
  • The sincerity, caring, camaraderie and humor
  • The well-organized subforums
  • The Weekender Thread!

Some technical things I appreciate (really well-crafted site):
  • "jump to first new post in thread" button
  • "my posts" link
  • "new posts" link
  • the blog, which I use as a scrapbook
  • thread tools (subscribe to threads and save in custom categories)
  • the autoresizing of imported pictures to fit within the avatar size limits (so it doesn't have be done in a photo editor first)

Thanks!

Not a very motivating answer, but I find the “mistakes” hugely educational. It’s not pleasant and often heartbreaking to read of relapses, but I’m no smarter or better, and I know it could just as easily be me writing about a relapse.

What I’ll also say is it takes bravery to post about misfortunes on SR, and I really admire such posters.

Oh and I’m not mistake free myself. I wasted at least ten years trying to moderate. It’d be great if no one else took so long 🙂

It was the 24/7 and the feedback. I distinctly remember the relief - on multiple occasions of - of seeing that I wasn't the only one that had bad experiences. Made me feel like less of a monster. Especially since, you know, over-active ego and all at the time....

Wow Hodd pulled up an old thread.

While not on the poll anonymity is also very important to a lot of folks. An internet forum like SR allows for a higher level of anonymity compared to local FTF AA meetings.
