My son was sick last night. Thank God I was sober and hadn't passed out. He was sick again at 3am and I was so grateful to wake up not hungover and be able to deal with it.

Today he is even worse and I have been washing, cleaning the toilets, tending to him every time he calls me. The only meeting I could get to this week was this lunchtime so I have missed it.


.......but I have been so grateful that I don't have a hangover. I don't know how I could have coped. He has been so poorly and I know I can't make him better but I can be a mum who is there for him and cares for him.

Apparantly there is norovirus going around so it might be like this for a few days but I am patient, peaceful and full of serenity thanks to being sober and the 12 steps.

Thanks to SR, especially today, you have been my substitute meeting.

Hi Intentions, Wow, that could have been my post! My 5 yr old son came down with the virus on tuesday and I am grateful that Im sober/hangover free for him and myself.
I came down with it at 230 this morning and I feel like Ive been run over by a truck but it will pass and Im going through it not blotting it out!
I hope your child feels better soon and you dont catch it too.
Arent we lucky? Its amazing to feel like crap and still be full of gratitude.

It's so nice to not have to worry about the kids or someone needing me when I've been drinking and shouldn't even leave the house, much less drive anywhere. It's so nice to know that I'm not risking lives by trying to do 'normal' things while drinking. It's so nice to be able to do what I need to do without having to cope with the self-induced disability I put on myself while drinking.

Being sober really rocks!

Sorry to hear that you have both come down with this nasty virus....my son has just got worse as the day has gone on.

I'm glad you have found serenity in your sobriety. Even if I had got sick I probably would have used it as an excuse to drink to make me feel better. The insanity in that thought.......when drinking only ever made me feel lousy in the first place.

Thanks, intention. Part of what's keeping me going is my personal need to be a good parent. I have a diabetic toddler who's blood needs to be tested every 2-3 hours and the fear of passing out and sleeping through an alarm keeps me *mostly* in check.

Kudos to you and congrats to your kids having a good mum.

That must be difficult to manage. I have no idea how I would have done that with drinking alcohol. Unfortunately the lure of alcohol was so strong, I couldn't say that I would have stopped if the medical needs for my child were that pressing. I would have liked to think that I would have done.....but who knows.

Now that I am sober I hear this a lot in meetings. A lot of people who don't remember their kids when they were kids or weren't there for them because they were drunk. Drinking robs us of so much.

Perhaps you will have grandchildren ???......and you can be there for them this time.

I really hope you can get yourself sober. The rewards with my child are immense. The guilt and shame I felt because I was not there 100% in mind when drinking was horrible.

Just by putting down the drink my relationship with him has changed so much for the better. I hope you can get that with your babies. Please don't wait like so many I hear who missed all their kids' childhoods through drinking.

I just wonder how you are the little one are doing today. Any better?

My son was worse this lunchtime and as it had been 48 hours I called NHS direct. The nurse who called me back was really lovely and reassuring. I was very grateful for that. They recommended Dioralyte for dehyrdration and a friend has kindly been out to buy it for me and some food supplies. Another thing to be grateful for.
