Just wanted to ask...
I'm only at day 4 and am wondering will I always feel like this...fighting temptation etc etc..
In a word .... no.
The bad news is -
if you put as much energy into your recovery as you did into your addiction ....
if you commit to any ANY system of established recovery,
you're going to find yourself in a whole new life,
with all new friends
with all new oppoprtunities
that used to be excuses to drink or use or run away.
You're going to have so much new and interesting stuff to do -
and still only 24 hours in a day to do it.
hmmm.
that's not such bad news, after all, is it?
But - the KEY answer right now for you is -
no.
you do NOT spend the rest of your life
all tensed up
resisting the urge.
The urge lessens.
Then it ceases to be an urge at all.
Do your work now, though.
I can't stress that enough for you.
Find a group
commit to the program of recovery.
Commit like you did to using or drinking (whichever one you did)
and I PROMISE you ...
... you never have to go through this again.
Thank you all so much for all of your input, I'm touched that so many have responded, shared the benefit of their experience and given me such insight...I will re-read this thread when things start to slide...i'm truly grateful to you all x
keen when things are at there worse, find a quiet spot, sit down and think about everything you are grateful for, think about how many of those things are directly or indirectly a result of being sober, think hard about the good, you will develop an attitude of gratitude! As long as I keep an attitude of gratitude the idea of a drink never enters my mind. BTW there is a difference between the thought popping into ones head about a drink and obsessing about one, looking at what I have to be grateful for helps with both though.
It does get better, both with time and with work on ones recovery, just be patient, do not drink before the miracle happens.
