Seeing a doctor has helped me quit drinking by helping me realize if I don't stay sober, my liver will deteriorate (he called it "fois gras" after the last ultra-sound) to a point of irreparable harm. I just heard about a guy who's been living here in Japan for 30-40 years and he's down to about 10% liver function, and he still doesn't believe it's due to the alcohol! Apparently he's yellow and can't move off his couch. I don't want to end up like that.
Remember, the doctor has to remain confidential, or s/he can lose her/his license. You might also have other conditions/symptoms/etc... that either are or aren't directly related to alcohol use, but still must be addressed. Have courage and do what you know is best for you.
Good luck and good health.

HopeTo180: I stopped drinking, um, 39 (I think?) days ago. I actually didn't have very much in the withdrawl department (and my alcoholic brain then thinks, "well, then I must be ok!" lol). However, I think that so many years of drinking could very well have damaged my innards ...so I need to get that checked into.
Eclipse: how'd the appointment go?! You realize that we're all anxiously awaiting your response! I hope you were open to your doctor and feel so much better now. Each hurdle we cross sober only strengthens us.
