Checking in for 24 more today.

There's always such insight offered up here, and it's refreshing to feel open and receptive to it, much a like being a student again. I didn't realize how much I'd shut down and closed myself off while drinking, and I've learned to appreciate discomfort. Someone posted elsewhere the best and worst part of getting sober was experiencing feelings. Word.

Another day, let's do it.

Thank you Kris for being so strong and compassionate in your grief... you've helped me more than you will ever know. Sending you a massive hug and you too jsm, and Zoey and Hevyn and Willow and Suze and Goat..... Goat!!! You legend. How do you know all this stuff? I need to print out your answers to my questions and digest them because I can't take in all that knowledge at once. I want to visit the crater in Mexico and explore the unexplored depths of the sea and I wonder whether mankind will ever make contact with other life forms out there in the galaxy.... but for now, maths.

My son has to do his maths homework on a computer programme that tells you whether you get the answer correct or not. Last night, he diligently worked through the programme and got every question right... except his one...

Sue has 18 sweets. Tony has 18 sweets too. Sue gives Tony x sweets. She then eats 5 sweets. Tony eats half his sweets. Write the simplest expression showing how many sweets are left.

Naturally, I wrote 'Sue and Tony have some sweets left'. Thought that was fairly simple. But the computer didn't like that answer. My son then tried a few expressions.... he tried …

(18 - x-5) + (18 +x divided by 2) = sweets remaining

He also tried (13 - x) + (18 + x divided by 2) = sweets remaining

But the computer didn't like either of those answers. Also, my son used the proper division sign... he didn't write 'divided by'... I just can't find the division sign right now on my computer... never, ever needed it until now.

So, if anyone knows the answer, I'd be most grateful to know. I don't know why Sue and Tony don't just eat all the sweets. That's what I'd do.... but clearly I am lacking Sue and Tony's mysterious powers of moderation. Congratulations to everyone celebrating a milestone today and love to everyone. 24 more for me please xxx
Should the second half of the left side of the equation read something like this?:

[[18+x)/2]

I think the problem is just a missing set of brackets.

Tony started with 18 sweets and then got x from Sue, and then ate half of his whole stash.

(18 - x - 5) + (18 + x)/2 = sweets remaining

Then you can simplify it further:

18 - x - 5 + 9 + x/2 = sweets remaining

22 - x/2 = sweets remaining
