I have asked Carlotta to share her story. She shares her experience, strength and
hope with so many here at SR. Carlotta works with the homeless as well carrying the
message of recovery. She is one special lady!
Hi, My name is Carotta and here is my story,
I am a double winner: in recovery for both alcoholism and codependency.
I grew up with an alcoholic father and a mother who was addicted to pills. I was the
eldest and learned early on that it was my duty to be the responsible child.
I started drinking in my 30's and in 2001, after getting very physically sick I went to
rehab in March of that year and found recovery through AA.
I was involved at the time with a man who was a violent alcoholic. Having someone
drinking at home in front of me in early sobriety was very hard but I stayed sober,
joined Al Anon and broke up with my XABH.
I had a sponsor who was my best friend, I worked the steps, did service and life was
good.
Fast forward, my sponsor passed away, I moved to the West Coast in 2006 with no
support system. I lost everything, became homeless >in sobriety< and relapsed.
Unlike most people who relapse, my alcoholism did not kick back where it was at
when I originally quit (my last hard liquor drink >rum< was on 3/19/2001) and I
could go days not drinking.
I was able to straighten out my life, get a home, a new career and friends who had
no idea I was an alcoholic.
I started a relationship with a friend and coworker which ended up disastrously two
days before Christmas 2011. My depression got really bad and during the holiday
season of 2012, I went on a 3 week alcohol binge. I could not stop drinking and got
very scared.
I knew that sooner or later, the cat would be let out of the bag, people would find
out about my alcoholism and I would lose everything (I was a closet drinker at this
time ).
Drinking alone and isolating I realized I had two choices: Getting sober again or
committing suicide. I chose recovery.
January 20, 2013 is my sobriety date. I found SR a few days later and went to AA,
got a home group, worked the steps and started doing service right away. I also
checked out AVRT and use some of its techniques.
Like the first time around, the obsession to drink was lifted almost immediately but I
know that I have to keep vigilant: I am one of those people whose AV is really quiet
and who very rarely thinks about drinking but it is still there, waiting for me to be
vulnerable and without support.
When it comes to recovering from alcoholism, I believe that acceptance is the answer:
I am an alcoholic and can never drink safely again, it is what it is and today, I am at
peace with that.

There is a saying in AA. "Get in the middle of the boat." What that means is "Get involved,
don't just hang around the sides of the boat where you will likely fall back into the water".
That is what Carlotta did. She went back to AA, got a sponsor, a home group, and got involved
in service.
A lot of people may go to meetings but they never go any further than that and then decide
that AA does not work because they relapse, but they never got in the middle of the boat.
They didn't get a home group, they didn't get a sponsor, they didn't get involved in service.
These are the things that are suggested to everyone who comes into the rooms of AA.
Carlotta is living proof that when you take suggestions and get in the middle of the boat
that sobriety is very attainable. She is coming up on 1 yr 4 months on May 20th!
Carlotta has also done service for the 24 hour club in the past.

What a fabulous day. Spent the day teaching steps 1, 2 n 3 @ a rehab where I once was a client. I want to study counselling and work in a rehab. That's my vision 2014...so help me H.P. another 24 will do me a lot of good. 9:44pm Nairobi
