Relapse

If you have relapsed you are probably feeling pretty bad right now, but plenty of us
around here have been in your shoes.

But there are also others here who are living proof that you can relapse and still
achieve long-term sobriety.

I have stopped and started so many times in my life that I have lost count and sometimes
I forget that when trying to help a newcomer.

I forget how hard it was to stop and stayed stopped.

It truly is by the Grace of God that I am alive today.

I had a very low bottom.

So I do understand the guilt, shame and remorse, and self loathing that accompanies drinking
and drugging.

I used to make promises to myself that I couldn't even keep for an hour.

I'll just have one.

I won't drink until my son is in bed.

I won't get in the car and buy more after I have started.

I won't go to the bars.

I'll stop early so I get to bed at a reasonable time so I make it to work tomorrow.

I'll just drink beer.

I'll only drink on the weekends.

I won't call anyone on the phone tonight.

I could not keep promises to myself because I am alcoholic.

I have never been able to drink like a normal person, and I never had a healthy relationship
with alcohol or drugs. I never looked at alcohol as a beverage. It was a drug for me.

And I couldn't get it into me fast enough.

Relapse was a part of my story and many others but it does not have to be a part of yours
if you are new.

How do we avoid relapse. We stay away from the 1st drink/drug. It is the first one that leads
us down that road.

Do you feel like you want to have one last drink/drug? Ask for help here before you pick up.

Try to honestly remember what brought you here to SR.

That one drink/drug could take you to a very dark place with consequences that you may not
be able to cope with.

Even if you don't get into trouble. Isn't the morning after feeling enough to deter you from
that 1st drink today?

Please think that drink/drug all the way through.

Wouldn't you like to break those chains that bind you?

Haven't we had enough?

Way to go Deeker. So proud of you. Thanks for being our inspiration.
May be absent for a few days. My two boys are flying in tomorrow afternoon for the weekend festivities. My 60th on Saturday. Family and friends are gathering at our house for a party on Saturday. Not to worry about me friends. 2 cases of club soda stocked up for my drinking pleasure.
If I am allowed, I will sign up for 72 hours right now. Will check in on Sunday morning with a smile.

Well sobriety is working very well for me here this week. Day 3 and I'll take it with no alcohol. It could be a tough day but I won't have a drink.
