Our Words
Sometimes I forget how powerful words can be.
The words we speak can lift us up or send us into a downward spiral.
Remember the old saying...
"Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me."
I think they are wrong. Words can hurt us. I think they can hurt more than sticks
and stones.
Words can be really painful. Words can break our hearts.
Words have the power to tear us down, to wound and discourage us.
Words can hurt and frighten us. They can leave lifelong scars.
We should really be aware of what we say, how we say it, and when we say it.
Poorly timed and poorly chosen words can kill enthusiasm, cause deep
emotional wounds, lower expectations, break one's spirit, shatter
self-esteem, destroy relationships, and hold people back.
Our words have the power to bring life or death to our life, our relationships
and our future.
Words influence how we think.
The simplest little words, which we take for granted, have the power
to hurt or heal, to inspire or discourage, to help or to hinder.
I know that sometimes the people I am closest to are the recipients of my
words. Words that are hurtful and uncaring.
Spouted without a thought.
I know that I still carry around a little pain from careless words that were
spoken to me years and years ago. I am sure many of you carry some
of that pain too.
What did our words say today? Did we build up or tear down?
