The Holiday Season Is Here
Though it is a time of joy for many people, it can be a very depressing time for those
of us who are brand new in recovery.
It will be hard if we are new to sobriety being around others who are celebrating with
drinks and maybe some hidden drugs.
But we have to remember that we stopped for a reason. Even the Holidays when
we were drinking were really not that fun for us in the end. We could never recapture
the joy that we sought.
We could never get that perfect buzz, we always crossed over the line into oblivion.
I have a feeling many of us do not remember many Christmas's much past 3 pm in
the afternoon.
This year could be different, but we have to recognize if we are feeling sorry for
ourselves and if we have to high expectations of the events that go on around us.
Christmas is just another day and there will plenty more to follow. Don't believe the lie
that you are missing something if you are not drinking.
We need to make sure that we don't romanticize the drink when we see others
drinking. For them it may be a priviledge. But we abused that priviledge.
It is important to play the tape all the way through to the end, to the following morning..
Not just fantasizing about the Clinking of glasses and warm fuzzy feelings.
The truth is that when we start drinking we don't stop.
When the family is about to wind down and have dessert and coffee we are just getting
started and will not stop till we pass out.
And all the joy we are seeking in that drink is completely thrown away when we
black out and can't remember a thing the next morning and all we feel is shame,
guilt and remorse.
If you are thinking of having one last hurrah, or having thoughts that maybe you
won't really commit to getting sober until after the New Years, Be careful.
Because if you go out there, you may not ever make it back. There are no guarantees
once we pick up that drink or drug.
For once we do we are no longer in control, our addiction is now the boss and we are at it's
mercy.
Instead of wondering if you can do this one last time. Stop wondering! There is nothing left in
that glass or bottle. This time will not be different, it will not be better, it will not be more fun.
It will be like the last time, the one that brought you here to SR.
And there will be folks who come in here to SR the day after Christmas telling us of their
nightmare.
Think it all the way through! It doesn't have to be you. You do have a choice!
