Six Months & Under Club Part 2
New year, new avatar.
That's the sign we had hanging off our back deck, until the City threatened us with a $500 fine. Enbridge (the same company that spilled 1 million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River last summer) wants to build an even bigger pipeline from Alberta's tar sands to my hometown of Kitimat, BC. It would carry over 21 million gallons per day.
All the alarms and shut off valves were working perfectly in Enbridge's Edmonton control centre this summer, and it took them 17 hours and 22 minutes to finally stop the flow of oil into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River. It took many calls by local residents to 911 about the overwhelming odours to prompt local authorities to investigate, then phone the control centre to advise them of the leak.
Human and organizational errors caused the spill.
Enbridge has already admited their alarms on this proposed pipeline won't sound for a leak of 45,000 gallons per hour or less. That means there could be a leak of 40,000 gallons per hour (or 960,000 gallons per day) and no alarm would sound.
This pipeline would traverse hundreds of miles of raw wilderness where there would be no residents to call 911. It would be days and millions of gallons spilled before it ever reached civilization.
As bad as that is...they want to bring supertankers into our port, despite there being three 90 degree turns in narrow channels just to enter the 50 mile long Douglas Channel. The Exxon Valdez spilled a mere 40 million litres - the 1,100 foot supertankers they plan to bring into Kitimat could spill 300 million litres.
Ahhhhh, that felt good...thanks for letting me vent.
Oh, about the sign; it moved to our neighbours deck, and we have people lined up to adopt it after they get threatened by a fine

What a nice day today. For the first time I actually enjoyed taking the decorations off the tree and from around our home. That used to be a MAJOR hassle and annoyance totally hung over.
This afternoon our daughter, our dog Zain and I went snowshoeing. It was beautiful because the snow has stuck to the trees for a week now, it snowed again this morning, and we had blue skies and sunshine. We explored some gullies and did some fun butt-sliding down some pretty steep and gnarly hills.

Hi you guys... just checking in, and I am so glad it looks like everyone had a safe and sober new year, as did I. I just got home today from visiting friends down in Hilton Head for a few days... I had a good time, but I'm very glad to be home. My friends down there are big on the bar scene (one of them is a bartender.) I wasn't really tempted to drink, and was perfectly happy ordering tonic and lime and chatting with everyone. But toward the end of the trip, it did start to get a little tiresome to be the only one not drinking. I just wanted to go home and sleep at night, not be out late every night watching everyone else drinking. I've only been home for a few hours now, and it already feels like a huge relief, even though I have to go back to work tomorrow. On the plus side, this trip gave me a lot more practice being in bars without drinking, and though I still don't plan to make bars a regular feature of my sober life, it's nice to know I can handle them when I have to.
Happy New Year all

Thanks Murray...you are right...the Sound always brings me peace.
SBTS...I'm glad you are back...it is nice to know we wont fall apart when in the bar scene but it has lost its appeal, no?
Lyddie has 6 months today....yeah Lyddie! I can't believe we are already starting to graduate this thread. There is nothing after 1 year...I guess we will have to start an oldtimers thread then...lol!
Congrats lyddie!

Trying to resist getting hermit fever over here. Being newly sober and, as hopeful as I am, unfortunately uncomfortable makes it to easy to convince myself to stay in. SR is the bomb but I know I gotta do my face 2 face program if I really want to give myself a chance.
Bed...is...just...so...comfortable lol
