OT--book recommendation
A friend of mine just published her first novel--it's being released September 8, but she sent me an advance copy to read, and it's really awesome. You can google it and read the blurbs--"The Art of Crash Landing," by Melissa DeCarlo.
I have a feeling the story would grab a lot of you--it's about a woman who finds herself sort of following in the footsteps of her rather messed-up mother (alcoholic, many bad relationships, now deceased). She goes to mom's home town when her maternal grandmother dies, leaving her a house. She's literally living out of her crappy car, which finally breaks down when she gets there, and she starts poking into her mother's past. It's a very fun read--the characters are very vivid and the writing style extremely witty.
Anybody looking for a good fall read, check it out. It's available for pre-order on Amazon, and presumably will be available at the library. And if you like it, spread the word--she needs the exposure, lol.

Me, too, but then I remind myself that she didn't just sit down one day and pound this thing out in an afternoon. She's been working on her writing for years, putting in many long, hard hours, and working with other writers to get to the point where she has a story to tell that other people will pay money to read. I've never been that disciplined about my writing, but I love to see talent and hard work rewarded.
