My Best Friend Died Today
My Best Friend Died Today
She died of alcoholic cirrhosis. She turned 40 in the hospital, one week before the doctors told her there was nothing more they could do for her. She was released into hospice care, and died 6 days later, in her parents home, surrounded by people who loved her dearly.
Today has been a day of sorrow and reflection, but also a time to appreciate life. Yes, she was an alcoholic. Yes, it killed her in the end. But she was also a daughter, sister, mother, friend. Before the disease took hold, she was fun, energetic, successful, and fiercely independent. I am so grateful that I got the chance to tell her that I loved her, one last time. Her influence in my life over the last 25 years has shaped the person I am today.
When I first came here to SR, I didn't have a clue just how powerful and dangerous this disease is. I thought it was easy - just quit drinking - and go on with your life. Today I understand.
Rest in peace now, my friend. And my prayers to all of you out there tonight, fighting the battle of your life. May you learn a lesson from this - and not take your days for granted.

I am so sorry, tuffgirl. I'm glad too that you got to tell her how you feel. I have a situation in my own life, not alcohol related, but someone I used to be very close to is dying and I'm trying to decide whether to visit him or remember him as he was. I think maybe you just made up my mind for me. Prayers going out to you, your friend and her family.

So sorry for your loss, prayers for you and all who loved her. Alcoholism is not only a disease of the mind, but the body as well. I am certain your friend loved you even more simply by being there for her. She is at peace now, and was blessed that she was surrounded by loved ones when she passed. God bless her, RIP.
My condolences, tuffgirl. I've been praying a lot lately for those in the throes of addiction, who can't seem to find their way back toward the light. I will add you and her family to my prayer journal tonight.
A poem for your friend........As she is hurled into outer space may the angels help to lead the way and all the prayers that her family made shine upon her soul and keep her safe and all her friends that have passed away are there to greet her as she pass the gates and as she heads into the tunnels light I hope it leads to eternal life.
