Dear Tuffgirl - I am so sorry to read about the loss of your best friend. I believe that our life here on earth is just a "season" and she will now have eternal peace. I hope that thought brings you some comfort in this painful time. Also, I pray God comforts all those who loved her.
Thanks everyone for your kind words. It was a hard thing to decide to share, and I imagine a scary thing to read for many. Who knows why her liver failed at 40, when others drink all their lives and live a very long time.
But if this post has convinced even just one person to put down the drink and seek recovery, then her death has meaning. If it proved to even just one person why recovery is so important, then her death has meaning. She would have liked knowing that.

Tuffgirl,
I am very sorry for your loss.
It is important to document the devastation that this evil addiction causes.
We must shine a light on it.
My thoughts go to those who loved your friend.
She is at peace tonight.

She died of alcoholic cirrhosis. She turned 40 in the hospital, one week before the doctors told her there was nothing more they could do for her. She was released into hospice care, and died 6 days later, in her parents home, surrounded by people who loved her dearly.
Today has been a day of sorrow and reflection, but also a time to appreciate life. Yes, she was an alcoholic. Yes, it killed her in the end. But she was also a daughter, sister, mother, friend. Before the disease took hold, she was fun, energetic, successful, and fiercely independent. I am so grateful that I got the chance to tell her that I loved her, one last time. Her influence in my life over the last 25 years has shaped the person I am today.
When I first came here to SR, I didn't have a clue just how powerful and dangerous this disease is. I thought it was easy - just quit drinking - and go on with your life. Today I understand.
Rest in peace now, my friend. And my prayers to all of you out there tonight, fighting the battle of your life. May you learn a lesson from this - and not take your days for granted.

My heart broke for you Tuffgirl when I read this post. I'm 40, my RA is 44 and when he was in ICU the nurse woke me up to ask me if I thought he should be in hospice instead of ICU since it was his third time on death's door. I was stunned she asked me that then - Now, I understand what the disease of alcoholism is and the trauma it causes for everyone who loves the alcoholic.
I am truly sorry the your loss of your Best Friend today.
Come To Me
God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you
and whispered,
"Come to Me"
With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.
A Golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best
