PAWS - Dizziness

Hello,

I am hoping that you guys can help me. I have been alcohol sober for 953 days, 2 years and 7 months yet I always have dizzy spells ( sensation of being dizzy ) .

I consulted with my doctor, did my blood work and everything turns out to be normal. The doctor does not see it as anxiety because she asked me if I feel like I am walking on pins and needles, have any heart palpitations to which I said I don’t. The doctor to some degree concludes that it may be vertigo.

I feel this way more so after some what high intensity cardio exercise or towards night. I am not sure what this dizzy feeling I have in my head. Any suggestions, clues. Is this something to do with PAWS? Did any one of you experienced something similar?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and God bless

Hi and welcome Leo

I've been dizzy a few times in my sober life but not in the first couple of years.
My spells were mostly die to high blood pressure and sometimes, believe it or not, ear wax.

I hope you can find out for sure what your problem is - and congrats on 976 days

Folks can check for allergies which affect eyes,
ears, nose, throat, circulatory, and circulation as
a result of smoking. Ear plugs if used too.

Congrats on your continued sobriety.

so strange that you mentioned ear plugs. I am a light sleeper and I wear ear plugs every night, I wonder now if it has something to do with my ears!!

I think the earplugs hold the moisture inside the ear
which lead to possible infection traveling to the ears,
down the throat, to teeth, gums, which is where the
latest problems began several yrs ago.

I first went to the dentist complaining about pain deep
within the gumline. So they did xrays and not showing
much that would be contributing to the pain I was experiencing.

Xrays, expensive, dental work to go in the gums to clean
everything out to no avail, the pain returned after i slept
with earplugs again.

I went back to the dentist and he still saw nothing in the
xrays and sent me home with antibiotics again.

Then, a light bulb went off in my head. I thought, maybe
i'll leave the earplug alone. Then I also work everyday in
my lovely backyard filled with garden beds and flowers,
sweeping and breathing in possibly pollen or whatever
else is lurking out there and maybe i could be experiencing
allergies. Which is something Ive never had before.

So, i took the antibiotics 2 yrs ago, no more earplug and
watch what im doing out side in my gardens and.....

no more dizziness, no more pain in my teeth. No pain
period. Yay..!!!!!

Soooo, now im wondering why the dentist didnt say a word
about allergies or earplugs could be the cause of the pain I
was experiencing?

Sure, i went to the eye doctor for dizziness and yes to the
dentist for gum pain and test done on all that and no one
said anything about allergies or the earplugs were causing
an infection which was affecting nerves that are connected
to everything in the head area. Eyes, ears, nose, throat, teeth.

I guess if one has gum or teeth problems you go to the dentist.

Then if you are having problem with dizziness, you go to the
eye doctor for them to run test for vertigo and such.

Then if they cant find anything and you are still experiencing
pain, then, that means we are crazy...lol

That is exactly how i felt when i was in so much pain
and no one could find the culprit of the pain.

cuckoo cuckoo...lol

I went back thru my daily routine thinking about what
i was eating, maybe it was the crunchy Doritos i was
eating or anything I could come up with. So i eliminated
the earplugs, cut out the chips, watch outdoor activities
and now, now, 2 yrs later, no pain and havent had the
need to go to any dentist or doctors for pain. Yay...!!!!!

Oh, and i can still eat Doritos but im careful to not eat
too many to irritate my gums esp. since i'm getting older.

Gotta take care of the one me cause that's all I have.

Oh, and I'm not cuckoo either....lol

I'm of sober sound mind and body today.

you are 100% correct, I went to my doctor and they look at the most obvious things they can diagnose and if they can’t they send you off to some other specialist. The doctor said, she will refer me to a balance doctor, they are the ones that tackle issues relating to vertigo. I will ask for a referral, maybe they can see something related to my ears I guess! My doctor I bet is as perplexed about the dizziness as I am. But like you said, I am also thinking and reading about all the thing that could be the cause for my dizziness.

I hope I get to the root cause of this issue, it’s been a long 2 years and 7 months. I appreciate your response.

I have dealt with Tinnitus and balance issues/vertigo on and off for many years. My tinnitus has never improved, but the vertigo and balance issues did improve significantly after getting sober. I cannot say if quitting drinking itself was the sole "cure", but my guess is that it was a combination of many factors - quitting of course, improving my diet, working on my mental health, etc.

As far as "PAWS" - it's really not a diagnosable condition ( from either a medical or pscyhological standpoint ), it's more of a collection of symptoms that recovering addicts can sometimes have. Not to say that it's not a real phenomenon, but it cannot be the "Cause" of any ailment as it's not a condition to begin with.

that’s true! I am monitoring my diet and doing everything right.

when I ride my motorcycle, after I get home I feel that dizziness sensation all day long, that happens also after some what intense cardio session on a spin bike. I may consult with a balance clinic to see if it’s something to do with my ears. I can’t seem to figure this one out!

Has anyone suffered from motion sickness type of issues as part of P.A.W.S?

The list of symptoms that could technically be part of "PAWS" is almost limitless. Motion sickness can definitely be related to inner ear issues like dizziness/vertigo/etc though.

Have you ever spoken to a counselor or therapist regarding the possibility that some of this could be anxiety related? Many medical doctors do not have a good understanding of mental health disorders, mine did not back when I was having problems either. Their solution to me at the time was to prescribe some meds to see if it helped. Eventually I had been feeling so bad for so long that I broke down and went to see a counselor for an initial consultation. A few months later turns out i did indeed suffer from GAD and health anxiety, and I was literally manifesting physical symptoms based on my own self-diagnosis/worry/etc.

This certainly may not be the case for you, but it never hurts to at least seek multiple opinions.

Hey Leo,

Just stumbled upon your post. I too have been sober for over 16 months. I personally chalked it up to binge drinking and on occasion excessively. I remember even feeling the off balance and dizziness when i was drinking but I guess i didnt really focus on the issue until I quit alcohol. Now it seams that my senses are recognizing every little body symptom. I have been to a balance center and they said it was vertigo, but I dont feel that it is. I have clogged ears and Tinnitus which I beleive this has more to do with it than it being vertigo. Im looking into my ent and maybe it could be due to a allergy caused issue. Im still being proactive to try and find the exact source. Hope you get well and let me know your outcome.

Hi,

thank you so much for your reply. I am leaning more towards going to an ent to get their insight on the issue.

I remember about 2 years and 7 months ago, when I use to go to the gym and having the dizziness. Also, when I ride my spin bike or motorcycle after I stop , I feel dizziness sensation along with feeling nauseous. And these feeling will not subside for at least a day or two.

my blood sugar level after I got off my spin bike was 88 and since yesterday and all day today, I feel like hell, spinning sensation with nausea. My blood pressure seems normal. All blood work is normal except for cholesterol.

I am really hoping it’s something ent can figure out because no matter how much I try to diagnose my issues I can’t .

I wish I can figure this out because it’s so painful to live with this for over 2 years and 7 months. I just feel so abnormal that I can’t even ride a bike.

I got a question for you, after being diagnosed with vertigo, what treatment did they’re propose? Also, did the dizziness stop ?

Hi Leo,

sure sounds like. Horrible feeling to have. They recommended i go to a balance center to try and help alleviate the symptoms. I did ho twice a week for 2 months and it helped out a bit. Didn't bring to 100% but I would say 50 % better than I was. I would recommend you see your doc and ent to help you get to the root cause. I'm personally still dealing with the symptoms in a lesser form.

Hope you get better and find your cure

Leo,

Hope you are doing well. I was just curious as to how your were feeling with dizziness and vertigo you were having. I personally continue to have tinnitus and buzzing and can't seem to figure out the case. I'm scheduled to see ent as they recommend I'm allergic to the greenery.

I quit almost 10 years ago have battled dizziness ever since. For me sometimes it’s low sugar sometimes it’s anxiety and I think sometimes asthma or bp. It’s a rough cycle I can handle the dizziness alone tho it’s just when it makes me worried. My blood works all great doc can’t find nothing one said it’s prolly my sugar and at times I don’t doubt that but other times I don’t think that’s why.

I did read somewhere that many alcoholics have sugar issues it’s common a and a contributing factor as to why we run to a drink which is just another form of sugar really.

wish I had a better answer. If anything these are some things to maybe watch out for as possible causes
