What are your inspirational songs?
What are your inspirational songs?
I've spent all day listening to a radio station I found at random that plays 80's and early 90's songs. Being the age I am (ahem, nearly 40), this has given me a lot of pleasure, and happy memories - especially as they were all before I became a drinker. They've all reminded me of how innocent, fulfilled and easily pleased I was before I discovered booze.
This got me on to thinking....what are YOUR inspirational songs? Or ones that give you happy memories that don't include drinking? Or ones that take you to a happy place and remind you of how amazing it is to be sober?

The other day "Drunk in My Past" by X came up on the ipod shuffle.
I used to listen to that song and think, "I wish that were me, that I could get rid of the drinking."
And it felt good to hear that song and realize that I've made it.

Thanks for the song tip! I'm You Tubing it as I speak, as I've never heard it before. I'd like to gather all the song suggestions everyone posts and put it on my ipod for when I'm working out at the gym. Keeping me focussed!!
Straight from my iPod, some 80s faves that might play well during a cardio workout...
You make my Dreams (Hall & Oates)
Walkin on Sunshine (Katrina and the Waves)
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper)
Do You Believe in Love (Huey Lewis & The News)
Jump (The Pointer Sisters)
I'll Melt With You (Modern English)
1999 (Prince)
Here are a few songs that have meant a lot to me since becoming sober. Most of these aren't workout material, though...
Nobody Drinks Alone (Keith Urban)
Hate Me (Blue October)
I'm Trying (Diamond Rio)
Who I am Hates Who I've Been (Relient K)
Wasted (Carrie Underwood)
And it's become almost cliche, but I'd be remiss to not mention Pink's "Sober". She says a lot in that song.
When it's good, then it's good, it's so good, 'till it goes bad
Till you're trying to find the you that you once had
I have heard myself cry 'never again'
Broken down in agony and just trying to find a friend
Yep, nailed it.

For me it's two songs
"Hard Sun" as sung by Eddie Veddar
'Rooster' by Alice and Chains.
"Hard Sun" was written by another band about addiction but it's an amazing song.
Also "Society" by Eddie Vedder. That's the song I play guitar with now with my 8 year-old son since I was a moody sleepy drunk the first 8 years of his life.

There is SO much music that is inspirational to me...this is just a small list. Btw, great thread!
I love anything by the original Alice in Chains, even in his passing years ago, Layne remains to be a huge inspiration. I also love the other band he sung in - Mad Season. One incredibly raw and powerful song by that band is "Wake Up".
I also love Staind...particularly the older stuff back when Tormented and Dysfuction came out. "Excess Baggage" - a hidden track that speaks to me. "Schizophrenic Conversations" and "Please", 2 newer ones that are very personal to me.
Anything by Evanescence... Amy Lee - Enough said. Seether ft. Amy Lee "Broken"
Stone Sour - "Bother"
Slipknot - "vermillion pt. 2" and "snuff" ------ Corey Taylor is one incredible vocalist.
A couple of my other favorite songs lately have been "Changes" and "This Time" by 3 Doors Down.
I could go on and on and on...Music has always been a huge part of my life and has helped me thru some really really f*cked times in my life. I don't know what I'd do without it. I tend to lean towards what some refer to as "Depressing" or "Dark" music - this is ALL that I have ever known as I suffer from several mental illnesses. I've known nothing BUT a constant state of deep depression so this kind of music I can not only relate to, it's extremely comforting to me. Also, really into death/black metal....

Thanks for all your songs so far! I'm going to make sure I take the time to listen to every single one listed. It's inspirational for me too - songs are so personal and reveal so much about a person and their thoughts. It's also good for us all to have some lighter moments on here, too, I think, since we all reveal so very much to each other.
