It can go bad -fast!
Hi, schem,
I joined the forums back in July (can't believe it's only been that long), and I can't believe I missed your original thread.
I went through the ordeal of seeing someone I loved slip into a coma from liver and kidney failure. We were told IF he survived he would certainly need a transplant. The amazing part was that once he had recovered sufficiently to have a biopsy it showed only EARLY cirrhosis--if he never drank again, he would be likely to live an essentially normal life. Even more amazing, however, is that he then went back to drinking. So far as I know (this was many years ago) he is still working on drinking himself to death.
He, too, had no warning--he was hospitalized with pneumonia, went through acute alcohol withdrawal, accompanied by liver/kidney shutdown. He had 40 quarts of fluid drained from his abdomen AFTER being discharged from the hospital, had severe encephalopathy for weeks, was yellow head-to-toe.
I am so glad you've shared your story. No doubt you have saved lives.
I will keep you and your brother in my thoughts and prayers.

Schem, as has been said before....WOW and thanks so much for this thread. I am about the same age and I really appreciate your honesty. Had a friend die last Thurs. from liver failure...he was 36. Please keep sharing.
thank-you schem for sharing your story, (l've only just found this thread)
l'm with every-one else and believe that by you sharing your health problems and how sick you had become because of your drinking will keep others sober.
Looking forward to your next post letting us know how you are getting on.
This site is so supportive of others doing their best one day at a time to stay sober and l hope you can convince your brother to read some of the posts.
The first step towards to change is acceptance.
Once you accept yourself you open the door to change.
Change is not something you do, it's something you allow.
