Recovered
I liked the way Boleo put it once. Recovering = thinking about not drinking, recovered = not thinking about drinking.
To me it means that alcohol no longer cripples my life. The first part of the AA program brought about a spiritual experience which removed the alcohol obsession. That's the alcohol dealt with. I have recovered.
Now about life... Step ten," our next function is to grow... This should continue for or lifetime". It seems to me that all people do this, it's part of normal life not unique to alcoholism, though it is perhaps more important for the alcoholic to be aware of the need to grow, and we have a great way through steps 10, 11 and 12.
I sometime think the term recovering is used to describe the personal and spiritual growth that happens after the alcohol problem has been removed.

AA says recovered.page ix To show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered is the main purpose of this book.page 85 It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve.- So even if you are recovered you can become unrecovered real quick if you don't stay spiritually fit.

I didn't even know about Living Sober until AFTER reading the BB through twice!! When I found out about Living Sober I was pissed because no one had told me about it I really like that little book.
I agree that being recovered is the removal of the obsession over alcohol in your mind. I don't think you can place a time frame on when you get to this realization. Some people get it quite early on, while it takes others many years to feel it, and some may never get there, and will "white knuckle" it forever. I think when you truly believe alcohol does absolutely nothing for you, and embrace a sober life, you will get there. I personally fill my life with fitness, healthy eating, and proper rest and relaxation. I am very new to sobriety, 2 months, but would call myself recovered. I still go to aa, and will not let myself get complacent, but I have a feeling of peace I never thought I would have. I feel I have crossed over, and "get it" now. I prey everyday to keep this serenity. I am not trying to sound holier than thou, just trying to be honest about what I feel. The obsession has been removed, and the urges are gone. In my opinion, that is recovered.
which usually in time leads to many more
still in AA after 6 years of steady attendance
getting complacent was what took me out before
good thinking there
MM
Abstinent = Getting alcohol out of my body.
Recovery = Getting alcohol out of my social life.
Recovered = Getting alcohol out of my mind (root and branch).
"We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality - safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is our experience."

To me it would mean that I have healed from all the damage and have reset myself back to normal. Whatever normal is for me that is. Real me would have been horrified at the way I lived those 10 years. Me right now is pretty disgusted by the whole thing. I keep thinking I am put back together and then I see another way it affected my thinking.
