How much time to come down from meth?
My son is staying with me while drying out from Crystal meth, pot and alcohol. How many days should I expect him to do nothing but eat and sleep?

Oh, about as long as you'll let him. Meth generally clears the system within a week, pot a lot longer and alcohol in about 6-8 hours. Depending on the amounts he was doing it is probably best to get him in front of a doctor. The real question is what is he going to do NEXT. Drying out, or detoxing doesn't last nearly as long as the cravings and psycological effects. This withdrawal easily and frequently leads to starting all over again, despite the promises he will be making to you. I strongly suggest some form of residential treatment followed by sober living for him. I suggest even stronger that you visit our Nar-Anon boards for ways to take care of you, no matter if he stays sober or not. If you need referrals for help, please let us know the state and county you are in. And do take care of you...

Thanks for the response. Should I assume he's ready to start doing something with his life after only 3 days of 20 hours sleep? or should I give him a full week?
We live in California in Placer County, walking distance from Sacramento County. He has been living in Santa Clara County. Also, he has no medical insurance, as he can't hold a job.

Heres a few to start with. Be sure to ask them for additional referrals, and let us know how it's going.

3 days to get off meth?
Must not have done very much!
It took me a whole month to get off the stupid couch. Then at least 6 months to even begin to start doing things on my own, like go to the mailbox. (I couldn't even do that without putting a needle in my vein somewhere).
Then another 6 months to start feeling energetic.
I sure was glad to be around others like me during that time. Still am.

Give your son the best gift he will ever receive, "Narcotics Anonymous". Find a local meeting and demand he goes. Right now he is facing the hardest decision of his recovery, To Stay Clean. You should not let him continue to stay isolated. Suggest a treatment center for drug abuse. If he refuses, demand the meetings, as a stipulation, ir he wants to continue to live with you. And take the suggestion given, get help for yourself.
