Well said, FT. I see it this way too. It's anything at all... thought, feeling, image, taste or smell sensation, etc.

I include in my beast definition thoughts of self-doubt, about inability to choose, to make a decision and stick to it, about inability to get and remain sober, even about staying sober for good, permanently and unconditionally. Plenty o beast around.
