Like Zencat said , cold reading letters on a screen and trying to interpret emotional content(context) without the requisite human modes of communication In Person is difficult neigh impossible. Telephonic communication is second best for real time discernment, at least we can detect vocal intonations, we have all these faculties and capacities 'for a reason', modernity blinds us to these truths. I hate texting unless it's for plain information like time and location and maybe "yeah here, the plane worked well " .
Over the recent years my wife has had similar problems of interpretation and my one trick pony answer is always , just Call him/her you won't even have to ask if anything is amiss , you'll know either way right a way
