Lunch with friends

Had lunch in Greek restaurant yesterday with two old friends.

The waiter delivered up 3 'complimentary' port's at end of meal. My friends looked mortified for me, but I smiled and pushed it away. They are not big drinkers, and both struggled to finish my port for me. Good, kind friends.

For me it was no longer a problem, and we laughed when I said, first time I've ever apologised for not drinking.

I love that.

Yeah those complimentary drinks, drink cards, subsidised drinks etc can be a real trap. Well done Steely!

I am cackling at the thought of someone struggling to finish an unexpected free drink.

Well done, Steely.

It's actually very rude on the part of that restaurant to presume everyone wants to drink alcohol, especially port which isn't the lightest choice. I wouldn't say anything to the waiter, but I might send a polite e-mail to the restaurant to say it's 2022, not everyone wants to drink or might be driving so maybe asking before dishing out alcohol would be a good option. That's just me. But well done, sounds like you had a nice meal

Edit to say how observant and nice your friends are. I don't think I have any friends who'd be that perceptive. Lucky you.

Thanks Hodd. I take your point, but I won't e-mail them, just happy I could refuse with a smile.

My poor friends were pouring tiny amounts of mine, into theirs as didn't want to offend, as was 'complimentary'.

I wanted to say, "just throw it down". But that's not how you drink Port.

Could never get the hang of that sipping, savouring, thing.

Hope all is well with you Hodd.

All good thanks, Steely.

I can't do sipping either. I even got a taste for port wine at one stage of my drinking era, but I had some sense to know I would be progressing in some horrible way from beer/wine to a much stronger concoction. On the few occasions I drank port, I'd order a glass in a bar. If I bought a bottle for home consumption, I'd have sunk the lot in an hour. I did have a few brain cells left as a drinker

As for not making a scene in restaurants, I have a sister-in-law who will happily complain, send food back and be a general pain in the rear to spoil any occasion. Now I've sobered up and can size people up properly, without being dramatic, i think she might just be the devil incarnate One thing about being sober/old is you don't bother with people you can't stand. Phew! Glad again you had a nice time.
